Eidel-Kabir: Give Alms Not Arms ~ BY Lekan Badmus

By: Comrade Lekan Badmus.

Alm is defined as something given freely to the needy and the less – privileged. It is a charismatic gift to; not only the vulnerable but those in dire needs. Alm is an act of extending love to the others and it is something that must be given with lots of enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, giving alm in anticipation of returns is a negation of the spirit and tenets of alm. Alm is devoid of reciprocation. It is not a gesture that should be seen as trade by barter. The intent of alm is to bring succour and palliative to the poor.

In Islam, alm is the third of the five pillars of Islam. It is called ZAKAT. The other four are: Sahada ( absolute faith in the oneness and supremacy of Allah) Salat( prayer) Sawm(fasting during Ramadan) and Hajj( pilgrimage).

Zakat is accepted by Muslims globally irrespective of ethnic, regional or sectarian differences. It is charitable and considered obligatory. A Muslim does not need to be a millionaire before he could give alms.

The religious practice of Islam is based on the five pillars to which every Muslim should adhere. They are fundamental expression of Islam beliefs.

Armed on the other hand is a situation where people are equipped with weapons. A person who is armed is given an order to attack. This order may be warped in sinister or primordial motive.

Armed in the context of this article is not the legal security operatives who are constitutionally armed to defend the corporate existence of the nation and protect citizens lives and properties.

While ALM is humanitarian, ARMED is destructive. Alm signifies humane feeling but armed breeds chaos, anarchy and throws caution into the wind.

ISLAM is synonymous with PEACE.

However, peace seems to have eluded the nation. The incessant attacks and general insecurity in the land is worrisome. This has retarded the growth of individuals, corporate organizations and the nation. DisgustingIy, most of the crises plaguing the nation are orchestrated. However, it is un-Islamic for any Muslim to incite and instigate violence under whatever pretence. It is archaic and myopic to ascribe violence to JIHAD. The essence of JIHAD is for Muslims to be agents of desirable changes. We have got to be at the forefront of reorientation of values and virtues.

The Ileya festival has afforded us another opportunity to search our conscience and reconcile with Allah. To err is human. Every human being is infallible and an embodiment of woes cum inequities. We are not saints and so have to show remorse. Confess our sins and request for forgiveness with the mindset never to sin anymore.

Ileya should not be restricted to merriment. It calls for sober reflection and pensive mood.

None of us has the wherewithal to fight for God. In what capacity ? Have you removed the tick on your eyes before attempting to remove from others’ eyes! Who tells you are righteous!

Semi Allahu moni- hamida.

On a finality, every Muslim needs to respect the constituted authorities – our leaders. From the president to the governors and the Kings. We should be guided by Quranic injunctions. The leaders and followers have a great and complementary roles to play. Act well your part.

Islam does not forbid us from criticising the policies of the governnents but it has to be a constructive one. Our actions should not be channelled towards pulling any leader down. Our sense of reasoning and logic should not be blindfolded by politics and religious sentiment.

Government on the other hand should justify the confidence reposed in them by the voters. Fear of God should be your watchword. Your ascension to that coveated seat is not as a result of your political dexterity and sagacity. It is never by your wisdom.

Your Excellencies and Royal majesties, you are not qualified. God qualified you.

May Allah Continue to be our pathfinder and may peace and development in all ramifications sprout in the land.

Ma Salam !

Olorunsogo Council Chairperson, Momopewa Felicitates Muslim Faithfuls On Eid-el-Kabir

I heartily use this medium to wish the Muslim faithfuls of my local government, Oyo State and Nigeria at large a blessed and happy Eid-el-Kabir festival.

Truly, times are tough but we are a tough people too. Therefore, I have no doubt that we shall overcome our present economic and security setback sooner than anticipated, if we all commit to the ideals of nation building.

I enjoin every one of us to contribute in strengthening the bond of unity and oneness that exists among us. This, I believe, will spur us to avoid negative tendencies that could derail our efforts at ensuring that the dividends of democracy trickled down to the people at the grassroot.

As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, let us renew our faith in our nation and implore the almighty God to restore to us those values that place high premium on human life, love of neighbour and sharing even as we ventilate our faith in the unity of our dear country.

We have mobilized top lawyers to resist Igboho’s extradition from Benin, pro-Oduduwa leader, Akintoye claims

Igboho was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Monday, and he is believed to held in the country pending completion of extradition processes between Nigeria and the Francophone country.

A statement signed by Akintoye and made available to journalists by Maxwell Adeleye, his communication manager, said Igboho has committed no crime to deserve the treatment that Nigerian government is subjecting him to.

“I received last night the troubling information that Chief Sunday Adeyemo fondly called Igboho had been arrested at the Cotonou Airport,” Akintoye said.

“I and other Yoruba patriots who are immediately available are now working to provide the assistance necessary to ensure that nobody will be able to do to him anything unlawful or primitive and to prevent him from being extradited into Nigeria which is strongly possible.

“Fortunately, Benin Republic is reliably a land of law where the authorities responsibly obey the law. We have secured the services of a leading and highly respected lawyer whom we can confidently rely on.

“What the situation now calls for is that the Yoruba nation at home and in Diaspora must stand strong, resolved that neither Sunday Igboho nor any other Yoruba person will henceforth be subjected to inhuman or dehumanizing treatment of any kind.

“For a start, we must all see to it now that Sunday Ighoho will get his freedom back so as to be able to move and operate as a free person. We all know he has committed no crime.”

Akintoye said some people are trying to eliminate Igboho because he stood up to fight against the oppression of his people.

“We know that some people are trying to suppress or even eliminate him only because he stood up to defend his kinsmen, women and children who are being massively killed and raped in their ancestral home land; who are having their assets and means of livelihood destroyed, and who are facing ethnic cleansing and even genocide without having the benefit of protection by the rulers of their country,” he said.

“We know, furthermore, that for the protection of his people who are being brutalized, he has joined hands with many of his brethren to take the legally-approriate step, namely to seek the intervention of the International Criminal Court.”

Sanwo-Olu in his Eid-el-Kabir message issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, advised Lagosians, especially Muslim faithful to imbibe the lessons of sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim and work for the peace, stability, unity and progress of the country.

“Eid al-Adha has become a symbolic event in the history of mankind, following the events that led to the sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim, who held tenaciously to his faith in God despite his unpleasant circumstances at the time.

“The festival, therefore, reminds us that there will always be great rewards when we have abiding faith and patience in trying periods; persistence in prayers and tenacity in our belief, as well as sacrifice for the progress of mankind and development of our society,” he said.

Sallah: Lagos Gov Charges Residents To Maintain Sanitary Habits For Cleaner Lagos

The Lagos State Government, on Monday, reminded residents to ensure that gains already made towards a cleaner environment in the city are not eroded as they join Muslims in celebrating the Ed-el-Kabir.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, urged residents to complement the efforts of various agencies through timely evacuation of waste and cleaning of drains, especially during this festive period.

He said all waste generated through the slaughtering of rams and other animals, as well as waste from food items, should be properly discarded after bagging, through approved PSP operators, just as everyone must avoid unsanitary actions.

Bello, while felicitating with all Muslims, urged Lagosians to celebrate with moderation, bearing in mind that the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us.

He averred that all those who will engage in public outings during the holidays should avoid littering while observing all COVID safety protocols.

“In view of the prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic and observance of the prescribed safety protocols, everyone must always ensure that they handle waste in the most appropriate way”, the Commissioner stated.

Bello also used the opportunity to remind Lagosians that the Law against street trading is still in force, stressing that any form of street trading that includes the display of rams on major highways, road medians, walkways, lay-bys, gardens and parks across the State will not be tolerated.

Noting that it is usual for traders to take advantage of the season to market and sell rams and other livestock, the Commissioner warned that such trading must be done in designated markets without defacing the State’s aesthetics or compromising the wellness and wellbeing of residents.

Gov Sanwo-Olu Charges APC Candidates To Replicate Party’s Victories In Forthcoming LG Poll

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday charged candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming local government elections to replicate the political victories of the party being witnessed across the country in the poll.

Sanwo-Olu, who stated this at the handing over of party flags to the 20 local government and 37 local council development areas chairmanship candidates ahead of the local government poll at the All Progressives Congress secretariat located in Ogba area of the state, said the party’s current successes across the country, culminating in the mass defections of political top echelons to the party showed the acceptance of the party by the people.

He said: “This is a very important and significant event, which is the official handing over of our flags to all of our candidates. We are handing over the flags to the chairmen and the vice chairmen, of course supported ably by the party’s LGA chairmen so that they all can go back and do the same with their councillors and ensure that we have a resounding victory on the 24th of July, 2021.

“They are to go forth to the various local governments and campaign in all the nooks and crannies of the state. We are believing that this significant event will signpost our seriousness in our next local government election. And we are certain that the success we’re are currently enjoying at the national and states will also be translated at the local government elections as well.’’

The governor added that the local government is a critical arm of government, saying “We have three tiers of government and everybody has their roles and responsibilities. But as a state government we will continue to ensure that our development agenda is spread across the state and because we own all the local governments we will ensure it is reflective in all local governments and that is what we are doing.

“So what we expect from them is to key into our agenda. So that when they come in, they can also hit the ground running in all of the wards that we have. We expect them to start work immediately. The state government will carry out some projects in the wards but we expect complimentary roles from these chairmen; we expect them to compliment that and do more.

“There will be quarterly monitoring of their activities. The deputy governor and Speaker have that responsibility, and we expect this to create a healthy rivalry among the councils.

“We pray that APC will come tops; we hope these candidates will do well and they will not disappoint the people that would vote them in.”

Earlier, the party’s Caretaker Chairman in Lagos State Honourable Babatunde Balogun said the party is optimistic of sweeping the local government poll in the state.

Balogun said the ruling party led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the state has endeared the party to the electorate through massive infrastructure development and provision of basic amenities to the residents of the state, saying the party expects the electorate to reciprocate the gestures with votes.

“We expect all of you to be victorious in the next six days with the support of the Lagos electorates by the grace of God.”
