Peter Obi has decried rising lawlessness in Nigeria after the demolition of his brother’s property in Lagos.

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has spoken out against the worsening state of lawlessness in Nigeria, following the reported demolition of his younger brother’s company property in Ikeja, Lagos.

Peter Obi narrated how he rushed to the scene after a distress call, only to find security operatives blocking access and a demolition in progress — allegedly without a proper court order or demolition permit.

He therefore called for law enforcement agencies to wade in to ensure that Justice prevails and that Nigeria is not turned to Banana Republic.

Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, former senator, ex-governor of Kwara State, and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, has died at the age of 84.

Family sources confirmed that Adebayo passed on peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday in Abuja.

Born on February 24, 1941, in the Igbaja community of Kwara State, Adebayo’s public service journey began with his election as senator on the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) platform in 1979. He later served as Governor of Kwara State in 1983, shortly before the military coup that toppled the civilian government.

Between 2003 and 2006, Adebayo served as Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, bringing his statesmanship and reformist stance into the federal cabinet.

A firm believer in democracy, Adebayo was a leading member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), the movement that fiercely opposed military rule and fought to reclaim the June 12, 1993 presidential mandate awarded to Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

In 1993, Adebayo famously rejected a ministerial appointment under the repressive regime of General Sani Abacha—a move that further solidified his status as a man of principle. Two years later, on May 31, 1995, following a bomb explosion in Ilorin, the police arrested and interrogated Adebayo and other NADECO leaders in connection with the incident.

As Abacha’s crackdown on dissent intensified, Adebayo fled into exile in Canada in 1996 to escape persecution.

Until his death, Adebayo remained a symbol of courage, integrity, and the unyielding fight for democratic ideals in Nigeria.

Oyo State governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has declared Friday, June 27, 2025, a work-free day across the state to commemorate the beginning of the new Islamic year, Hijrah 1447AH.

The announcement was contained in a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo.

The governor said the day had been set aside to allow Muslims and residents of the state to celebrate the Islamic New Year and reflect on its spiritual significance.

Governor Makinde also urged all residents to use the occasion to pray for continued peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

“The Governor enjoins all and sundry to use the occasion to pray for the peace, unity and prosperity of the state in particular, and the country in general,” the statement read.

Governor Ademola Adeleke has expressed commitment to pursue resolution of the Osun local government question to a logical conclusion through legal means, congratulating people of Osun State over the recent Court of Appeal judgement.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the governor hailed the court ruling as finally reaffirming the truth about the legality of the validly elected and sworn in PDP chairmen and councillors following the court sacking of APC Yes/No chairmen in 2022.

The governor who commended the patience and commitment to due process by Osun people, noted that the latest judgement has put paid to any lie about reinstatement of previously sacked chairmen and affirmed the legitimacy of the PDP chairmen and councillors.

“Unlike the opposition, we are people of due process. The latest judgement is being served on all relevant stakeholders at state and national level. Our expectation is a quick restoration of normalcy in line with the law.

“I appreciate the deep love for peace and unity as demonstrated by the PDP Chairmen and councillors of the 30 local government and area councils since their swearing in. Your patience and support for the law has paid off”, the Governor reiterated.

The state governor further thanked security agencies for their commitment to law as well as peace and tranquility of Osun state even as he urged citizens and residents to continue to peacefully conduct themselves.

“Evil plots against our dear state on all fronts have been foiled. We must continue to remain peaceful and never allow agents of violence and enemies of the people to drag the state into violence and backwardness”, the Governor was quoted as saying.

A staggering 95 out of every 100 fever cases in Lagos are not linked to malaria, according to new data revealed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi. The startling statistic has ignited urgent calls for a shift in fever management and diagnosis protocols across the state.

Prof. Abayomi disclosed the data during the three-day kick-off of the Pathway to Pre-Elimination and Digitization Project, held in Lagos. The event focused on a Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test and Microscopy Comparative Study and a detailed assessment of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors’ (PPMVs) capacity to manage malaria and other febrile illnesses.

“This finding is critical,” Abayomi said, “because the widespread assumption that fever equals malaria is driving misdiagnosis, poor treatment outcomes, and a dangerous increase in antimicrobial resistance.”

The state government is now championing a multi-pronged strategy to tackle fever cases more accurately. The approach involves improving diagnostic capacity, training informal drug vendors, and strengthening public awareness on the need for testing before treatment.

With malaria long regarded as the default diagnosis for febrile illness in many communities, this shift is expected to have far-reaching implications for health policy, clinical practice, and public health education in Lagos.

Abayomi stressed that the misuse of antimalarial drugs and antibiotics, especially when fever is not malaria-related, is not only ineffective but could also worsen Nigeria’s battle against drug-resistant infections.

Veteran Nollywood actor Ganiyu Nofiu, widely known as Alapini, has voiced his deep disappointment over what he called the neglect of Yoruba entertainers who actively campaigned for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

In a heartfelt interview shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Alapini accused the Tinubu-led government of turning its back on those who toiled tirelessly to secure electoral victory, particularly entertainers who mobilized grassroots support across difficult terrains.

“Will Seyi Tinubu say he’s blind and didn’t see us, the elders, when we campaigned?” Alapini questioned, his voice heavy with frustration. “We were over 100 that campaigned. We were going around both old and young filmmakers. Where others could not enter, we campaigned there. We were entering marketplaces as if we were mad patients.”

The veteran actor described how he and others visited markets, rural areas, and remote communities without funding, recognition, or security driven solely by loyalty to the Yoruba cause and belief in Tinubu’s candidacy.

His comments reflect growing resentment among grassroots campaigners and aging entertainers who feel sidelined despite their visible contributions. According to Alapini, many of his colleagues expected appointments, financial support, or at the very least, public acknowledgment, none of which has materialized more than a year after the elections.

The video has since sparked debate online, with some netizens echoing Alapini’s sentiments while others argue that political support should not come with expectations of compensation.

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, has nullified the final forfeiture order granted against properties linked to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, handing a major legal victory to the embattled former apex bank chief.

In a split judgment delivered on April 9, 2025, and obtained by Lagos Reporters on Sunday, the appellate court ruled two-to-one in favour of setting aside the Federal High Court’s earlier decision that allowed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to permanently seize Emefiele’s assets.

The court also ordered a fresh trial of the matter at the lower court, citing procedural and legal concerns.

Back in November 2024, the Federal High Court in Lagos had approved the EFCC’s request for the final forfeiture of several high-value properties allegedly linked to Emefiele. These included:

Two fully detached duplexes at No. 17B, Hakeem Odumosu Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos;

A 1,919.592-square-metre undeveloped plot on Oyinkan Abayomi Drive (formerly Queens Drive), Ikoyi;

A bungalow at No. 65A Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi; and

A four-bedroom duplex at No. 12A, Probyn Road, Ikoyi.

The appellate court’s ruling reopens the legal battle surrounding Emefiele’s alleged assets and the EFCC’s efforts to tie them to financial crimes during his time in office.

Legal analysts say the retrial could either reinforce or unravel the government’s case, depending on how the evidence is re-presented in court

Governor Ademola Adeleke has warned radio stations in the state to desist from allowing incitement to violence and constant breach of the national broadcasting codes.

The Governor also cautioned opposition figures against inciting the public to violence on the recent judicial pronouncement on the local government leadership question.

In a statement on Sunday, the Governor expressed displeasure at the activities of some radio stations who allowed guests to incite the public to violence and also manifest disdain for lack of fair hearing to affected stakeholders.

The statement condemned refusal to caution guests who made libelous and sedition allegations against public officials while at the same time blocking the right to fair hearing for affected people.

The Governor has therefore directed the Commissioner for Information to summon the General Managers of all affected stations for a briefing before further action will be taken.

While drumming support for freedom of press, the governor said observance of broadcasting codes is key to responsible broadcast journalism, vowing to impose sanctions on any station that refuses to obey broadcast rules and codes.

Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke has cautioned opposition politicians against current trends of promoting violence in the wake of the recent pronouncement of the Court of Appeal.

He frowned at the recent interviews by some opposition politicians to take laws into their own hands, warning that law enforcement agencies will descend heavily on any trouble makers.

According to the Governor, the commitment of the administration to rule of law is unwavering, warning that those threatening violence to achieve political goals are enemies of the people.

The governor noted that the judicial process is the panacea to resolving political disputes, urging people of Osun state to remain peaceful and reject calls to violence by some opposition figures.

“We task our people to be law abiding. The local government question is being resolved without any further bloodletting. Those promoting violence will face the law at the right time”, the Governor was quoted as saying.
