Aging, Degenerative Disorders And The Apprehension Over Optimal Functions Of A Would-Be Nigerian President.

By : Comrade Lekan Badmus.

Few days ago, the former military president ( never mind the abberation of the nomenclature), General Babangida stirred honet’s nest when he posited that the next president of Nigeria should be a young chap. Characteristics of his maradonic style, the statement was a tacit exclusion of the two major probable heirs apparent to the presidency.

Arguably, IBB does not just talk. He is not a loquacious. But when he does or sneezes, he is not suffering from flu but one that is highly impregnated with proverbs. It is not therefore a misconstrue of intention to infer that the statement was political – an apparent reference to the doyen of contemporary politics; Asiwaju Tinubu and the serial presidential Aspirant, Alhaji Atiku. It however remains to be seen whether the statement was borne out of patriotism, innuendos or parochial sentiment. Known for who he is, IBB may be using age as a bait to play upon the intelligence of the public and a comical way to discredit the duo.

An objective periscoping of the statement of the evil-genius is not a bad idea in view of 2023 election. Thus, the correlation between Aging and Degenerative Disorders as contributory factors to optimal functioning of the next president.

Presidency is a real business. An herculean task, energy-sapping and highly demanding. The occupant of the coveated seat requires absolute fitness or health especially at this time of depressed economy in which the instincts of survival have become very acute and stimulated all faculties, leading atimes, to tilted and disturbed physical and mental states.

The grey hairs on the heads of most of our leaders do not necessarily imply old age but a consequence of stress; associated with physiological changes – the expression of which is coordinated by hypothalamus – located at the brain and the Autonomic Nervous System. The physiological changes that take place within a man, are to a large extent beyond his control.

Ironically, the demanding fitness of the would-be president is a relative term. From the interpretation of health by the World Health Organization-WHO (1948), ” Health is a complete state of physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of an individual; not merely the absence of diseases or infirmities”. An infraction from the above shows that no man could be absolutely healthy. Every man is a mortal. Really, health is dynamic. A quality of life which enables one to live most and serve best .

Be that as it may, the opinion of IBB was personal and so could not be fostered on the nation. The letter of the constitution is crystal clear on the qualifications which are requisites to political aspirations.
Efficiency is a product of experience, maturity and political will. The fact that an Aspirant has come of age should not be seen as an excuse to exclude or disenfranchise him.

Aging is the continuous wearing away of body tissues with the consequent decline in function of the body. Chronologically, a person is deemed to be aged when he clocks certain calendar years. However, he may appear old or young depending on his lifestyle and the magnitude of insults on his body within his environment. Physical signs of aging are multi-facetted. The skin loses suppleness, wrinkles, grey hair, teeth dropping, shrinking of body and facial distortion. All these changes are gradual and are accompanied with decline functions. Other physical traits are senile or dementia.

The greatest psychological problem which the aging encounter emanate from neglect and cynism of the society which seems to say that the aged and aging are useless. Prejudice against the aged as exemplified by IBB is displayed in several ways in our obsession with desiring to be youthful.

Evidences relating to mental efficiency of the aging show that intelligence does not decline with age. Although, certain degenerative disorders begin to manifest.
Aging is associated with degenerative disorders which are often referred to as diseases of old age. They cannot be rightly considered as being in the same category as other diseases especially communicable diseases. However, an interaction of the other factors in the causation of diseases can affect the diseases in this group. Degenerative disorders which are as a consequence of aging include arthritis (joint disorder), menopausal disorder, cataracts, hypertension, cancer, obesity, diabetes to mention but a few.

To a large extent, these diseases are inevitable because they are manifested in the wake of the gradual deterioration of the body tissues with age. In other words, if a politician lived long enough to escape the hazards of the environment, or adopted a healthy lifestyle, he would inevitably needs medical check- ups of the vital organs of the body. These organs have life spans. Therefore, it is not something strange for the likes of Tinubu, Atiku, Buhari, Obasanjo even IBB to seek medical attention outside Nigeria.

Truth be told, aging may not impede efficiency in as much as dementia has not set in. As long as a man is not physically incapacitated, he is as fit as a fiddle. Robert Mugabe of Uganda, Nelson Madiba Mandella of South Africa, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, George Bush and Donald Trump of US were of age; yet, they performed excellently. These eminent personalities were older than Jagaban and Turaki.

Old age is synonymous with wisdom. The ability of a leader to assemble competent professionals, technocrats and politicians of good repute is all what an aged leader needs to excel. His ability to harness these potentials, ditch directives and ensure sincerity of purpose are essential. Once such a leader is able to identify hypocrites and sycophants, success is a sure bet.

This piece should not be misconstrued or distorted to mean a campaign against the younger generation. Infact, the youth are not too young to govern. General Gowon was twenty-nine when he became head of state, Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso was about twenty-seven when he rode to power, Pa Awolowo was about thirty-seven when he gained prominence. Governor Bello of Kogi state was sworn in when he was barely fourty, Oba Abdulrasheed was a young lad when he was made the Oluwo of Iwoland. The reigns of these fresh bloods are outstanding.

Succinctly put, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. In as much as the constitution does not bar the sixties from throwing their hats into the ring, it would be prejudicial to begin a campaign of calumny against their aspirations.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY: IBADAN PRIME YOUTHS FORUM ENCOURAGE YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN AGRICULTURE

In marking this year International Youth Day, Ibadan Prime Youths Forum wishes to send our Goodwill message to the Youths throughout the country, especially during this era when youths transformation and employment are needed for National development.

It’s important we state, that this year’s theme announced by the United Nations fit into our current reality as a people “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health” at IPYF, we can’t but agree, that for development in our localities, the involvement of the youth innovation is essential.

We will recall, that according to a 2020 report of the National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment rate was recorded for youths between 15 – 24 years was 40.8% while ages 25 – 34 years stand at 30.7%.

The NBS also reports Nigeria’s youth population eligible to work is about 40 million out of which only 14.7 million are fully employed. With the above statistics, we cannot but agree that youth all round development is the only way out.

With the foregoing, we wish to state that youth empowerment in agriculture which is in line with this year’s United Nations theme on Food Systems is one of the feasible ways to reduce our Youth unemployment rate, we believe this is possible by introducing technology in both our farming and food processing methods.

Lastly, while we recognize the efforts of Government both at the local level and federal, we want to admonish government to do more in bringing more youths into Agriculture through innovations that will enhance their participation for National Development.

The Governor expressed concern over the number of Awaiting Trail Persons, ATP, across the five Custodial Centres in the state.

He spoke on Tuesday in his office while receiving in audience the Controller of Correctional Services, Ondo State Command, Mr. Opeyemi Fatinikun.

Governor Akeredolu commended the Nigerian Correctional Service for its systematic reorientation of inmates into the society under its 3is Initiative of Reformation, Rehabilitation and Re-integration.

He said the Agricultural and Entrepreneurial programmes of the Nigerian Correctional Service have been beneficial to the society and inmates after their terms.

The Governor assured of his administration’s readiness to continue to ensure that all agencies of government are assisted despite paucity of funds.

Earlier, the State Controller expressed the fecilitations and good wishes of his Controller-General and the Command to Governor Akeredolu over his victory at the Supreme Court.

He assured the Governor that his command will support the State Government “within the ambit of Criminal Justice Administration, Security and any other areas” required for effective collaborations.

WE MUST REDEFINE OUR CONSTITUTION FOR THE GOOD OF OUR PEOPLE – GOV AKEREDOLU

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has called for a redesigned Nigeria Constitution that will reflect the yearnings and aspirations of the people and take care of the interests of the various ethnic groups in the country.

Governor Akeredolu observed that the current agitations in the country are a pointer to the necessity and exigency of fundamental adjustments in the Constitution of the country.

The Governor spoke on Saturday at the 67th Anniversary and Annual Reunion of the Loyola College Ibadan Old Boys Association (LOCOBA) held at Premier Hotel, Ibadan, Oyo State Capital.

Arakunrin Akeredolu, an alumnus of Loyola College, was the Guest Speaker at the event. He delivered a lecture titled “ Redesigning The Nigerian Constitution For National Development And Inclusiveness.”

He called on the constitution review committee of the National assembly to ensure that all submissions on the proposed constitutional amendments are scrutinised and analysed with a view to coming up with useful suggestions.

Governor Akeredolu said: “Democracy operates, presumably, on the principles of freedom to choose representative leadership, reflective of political alignments as dictated by current exigencies, a group’s exercise of considerable control on socio-economic activities and preservation of its identity as a component unit within a broader political entity.

“It is permissive, on a liberal scale, of the rights of individual citizens. It also imposes duties and places checks on propensities towards licentiousness.

“A democratic system can only be effective to the extent to which the legal processes driving it are structured.

“The Constitution of a country is the basic law. The aspirations, anxieties and expectations of a political entity must be well captured in the document.

“All other laws must flow from this legal fount. It is not important for a constitution to be voluminous. It should be concise and written in a simple but elegant prose. It should leave no section of the country, for which it is designed, in doubt as regards inclusivity. All component units must participate as equal partners.”

Arakunrin Akeredolu stressed that it is an indictment on the members of elite class to have allowed the current situation to endure, saying it mirrors the depth of understanding of politics and political processes of the ruling class.

“We operate a Constitution daubed federal with all trappings of pretension. Ours is about the only federalism which allows the central authority to control virtually all aspects of existence which give identities to the federating units.

“And now that we are faced with serious security challenges, we must be bold to consolidate on the initiatives undertaken by the states to complement the efforts of the security agencies at the centre.” The Governor said.

He asked the National Assembly to repeal the many laws establishing many agencies whose functions overlap or appear to compete with those of the states of the Federation.

Governor Akeredolu said the National Assembly, as part of its patriotic assignment, must also appropriate funds for the sustenance of moribund agencies of the Federal Government.

“There are too many of them. They should reduce, considerably, the number of items on the Exclusive List and increase those on the Residual List for proper devolution of powers.

“I suggest a copious adoption of provisions in the 1963 Republican Constitution as a guide in our quest for a new socio-legal order. If all these suggestions are considered, I have no doubt that we will reduce, drastically, the socio-economic problems which we face at the moment.

“Our journey towards nationhood will have commenced from point of the adoption of these submissions and many more.” He submitted.

Makinde swears-in 7 commissioners, assigns portfolios

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Friday, swore-in the seven commissioner nominees who were reappointed into the cabinet, charging them to keep raising the bar of governance.

The governor, while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan, stated that names of the remaining commissioners would soon be made public.

He equally charged the reappointed commissioners to explore more innovative ways to deliver on their mandate and positively touch the lives of the good people of the state.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the governor as saying that the composition of the whole cabinet will be completed in the next few weeks.

The statement added that six of the reappointed commissioners retained their former Ministries, while the immediate past Commissioner for Women Affairs, Alhaja Faosat Ajoke Sanni was deployed to the Ministry of Special Duties.

The newly sworn-in commissioners include Mr. Akinola Ojo (Finance); Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, SAN (Justice); Chief Bayo Lawal (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters) and Prof. Dahud Sangodoyin (Public Works).
Others are Mr. Ayansiju Lawal (Establishment and Training); Mr. Temilolu Ashamu (Energy and Mineral Resources) and Mrs. Faosat Sanni (Special Duties).

Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde said: “Two years ago, I inaugurated the first State Executive Council with 14 members initially and the number eventually grew to 17. The cabinet was dissolved about a month ago. All of you here who have been reappointed Honourable Commissioners were members of that cabinet.
“Well, as they say, ‘you don’t change a winning team.’ Yes, that is true. But they didn’t say that we should not reassess our team. In fact, regular assessment and reassessment are important to keep teams working optimally. So, to all seven of you here today, I will say welcome back.

“I hope you have used the time to get enough rest and you are fully reinvigorated now for the task ahead. You have just under two years left to make even greater marks in your various Ministries.”
Governor Makinde, who maintained that his administration will continue to take development to all the nooks and crannies of the state, said his government has done massive works along the four pillars upon which the roadmap to Accelerated Development in Oyo State 2019-2023 is built.
“Our administration has become known for sustainable development in all sectors, with no communities left behind. We want to continue to do even more than what we have done before.

“I meet people and once they tell me they are from Oyo State, I ask them the geopolitical zone they are from. And once they tell me, I ask them if they have seen so and so projects in their communities. So, that is what we are known for. It is even development all across the state and that is where we really want to be.
“Two years ago, I spoke to you about the key roles you will play in ensuring that our people partake of Omituntun. “Today, there is clear evidence of the massive works we have done in the four pillars upon which our Roadmap to Accelerated Development in Oyo State 2019-2023 is built.

“Yes, we have done so much already but this is not the time to rest on our oars but think of more innovative ways to deliver on our mandate and positively touch the lives of the good people of Oyo State.

“When we complete our tenure in office, we will have set a new bar of governance in Oyo State and I believe that by that time, I would have one or two things to learn from yourselves. You have taken a break and now you are back.
“I remember that over a year ago, they said everything we were doing was audio. Then, I actually enjoyed being the ‘audio governor.’ For me being audio, they are acknowledging the visuals and by the time we are done, they will understand that we have set a new bar on governance.

“I was recently talking to a brother-governor and he said to me that, first, they called you audio. Now, they are saying we are seeing what you guys are doing. But then, they ask if those things are sustainable. We have sustained payment of salaries for our workers and pensioners in the state for over two years. So, they will constantly be shifting their position until they have nowhere else to shift to,” the governor added.

He equally stated that the new commissioners will all need to play their part in ensuring that emphatic and service-oriented leadership becomes the norm in the state, saying: “The people of Oyo State will no longer be dragged down to the days of mediocre leadership. You all have a role to play in ensuring that ’emphatic’ leadership becomes the new normal in Oyo State and, by extension, Nigeria because the whole country is watching. We should not relent but keep raising the bar.
“Of course, we have provided the channels to ask questions. I will also continue to ask questions to ensure we remain on the path to sustainable development in the state. So, when I am holding you accountable to a very high standard, it is because some of you will go beyond the current leadership role to something even higher.
“So, I urge you to rededicate yourselves to your positions. We have presented your scorecard before the state House of Assembly, which was a prerequisite to your reappointment. I want you to look at that assessment and ask yourselves if that was indeed your best. Are there ways you can serve the people better? Ask yourselves how you want to be remembered. Revisit the answers quarterly and measure your activities against your goal.
“This is a sure way to self-correct any inadequacy you may notice.

“In the next few weeks, we will have the whole cabinet once more. Our goals will remain the same. We will do everything in our power to move Oyo State from poverty to prosperity. So, I congratulate you on your appointment. Let us do it again.”

Kwara Polytechnic Students Embark On Excursion, Pay Visit To Ooni’s Palace, Other Ancient Places

Kwara Polytechnic Students Embark On Excursion, Pay Visit To Ooni’s Palace, Other Ancient Sites

The students of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology embarked on excursion to Ile-Ife on Saturday.

The students who were on excursion visited ancient Palace and some other historical places in Ile-Ife. OduduwaNews gathered that they were on excursion so that they would be exposed to ancient things they had been hearing about on Ile-Ife being the source of Yoruba race.

The leader of the students who identified himself as Senator Amoo Olamilekan while speaking to Oduduwa News correspondent at the Palace, said they were happy to be at the Palace to further sharpen their knowledge about Yoruba race but it pained them that they couldn’t meet Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi due to the failure to meet up with the time given to them. He said he appreciated the tourist guides who took them to Opa Oranmiyan, Ile-Orisa and other historical places

One of the student leaders, who identified herself as Adetunji Bolanle said, she has never been to Ile-Ife before and that it was a great opportunity to be part of the students that would come to Ife to see those ancient things physically.

A lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, Kwara State Polytechnic, Bolaji Adetoro who represented the Director of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology to supervise and monitor the students at the excursion spoke to Oduduwa News at the event. He said he was happy to supervise the students at the excursion, while he also highlighted the significance of the excursion which bordered on exposing the students beyond the four walls of the classrooms.

He further stated that they were able to see Obalufon who was said to have spent 400 years on earth. He however expressed dissatisfaction on their inability to meet Kabiyesi which was due to circumstances beyond their control.

The Deputy Speaker of Students’ Union Government, a student identified as Ganiyu Barakat and one other also joined voices together in appreciating the school management for granting them permission to come to Ile-Ife to broaden the scope of their knowledge.
