The Presidency has declared that Federal Universities in the country remains tuition-free, this is coming at a time when some federal institutions has increased their fees, with speculation that others might follow.
Read full statement below:
STATE HOUSE PRESS STATEMENT
FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES REMAIN TUITION-FREE
It was widely reported earlier this week across some news media outlets that the Federal Government had increased tuition fees in federal universities in the country.
These reports are inaccurate and not correct.
We are aware that some universities have in recent weeks announced increase in the amount payable by students on sundry charges.
However, the fact remains and we have confirmed that these are discretionary charges by each university for hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory and other charges. They are not tuition fees.
Authorities of these universities even made this fact clear enough in explaining the rationale behind these new fees.
For avoidance of doubts, federal universities in Nigeria remain tuition-free.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to his promise of ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of the economic situation of their parents, have access to quality tertiary education.
In addition to the Students’ Loans Scheme, under the Student Loans Bill signed into law by President Tinubu last month, which will go into implementation ahead of the next academic session in September, the Federal Government will also strengthen other mechanisms to support indigent students.
Parts of the government’s plans to make sure all diligent students complete their education on time, notwithstanding their parents’ financial situation, include work-study, merit-based scholarships and grants.

His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday sworn in 16 Commissioners who will work with his government and implement the omituntun 2.0 policies and programmes.
The Governor also officially swore in the new Secretary to the Government of the State SSG), Prof Kudirat Adeyemo as well as the former Acting Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni MNi into substantive position as Head of Service (HoS), Oyo state.
Governor Makinde who kept mum on official portfolios of the new Commissioners also swore in 13 newly promoted Permanent Secretaries of Ministries in the state’s civil service as well as the newly appointed Accountant General of Oyo State; Mrs Kikelomo Adegoke.
Makinde, after administering the oath of office and allegiance to the new appointees at the Executive chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat Ibadan on Wednesday, July 26 expressed confidence in their selection and capacity to bring their wealth of professional experiences to bear on governance.
The governor while disclosing that it was the first time the state recorded state cabinet well represented from all 14 federal constituencies in the state also tasked the new cabinet members to see their appointments as a call to service urging them to shun personal interests for the the common good of the state.
While highlighting some of the key achievements of his first term administration and the support of his then state executive council towards the actualization of his accelerated development agender under Omititun 1.0, Makinde urged his returning and new Commissioners to redouble their efforts saying there was more work ahead to be done.
He also disclosed that contrary to the impression that second term administration was mostly easy due to relaxed expectation in another term of office, Makinde noted that his Government was poised to leave a legacy of good governance while tasking the new state cabinet members on inter-ministry cooperation and synergy for efficient performance while stressing the need for cohesion in government.
While congratulating the new perm secs over their new elevation described their promotion as well deserved having passed the required examination meritoriously urging others aspiring to be so elevated to the rank of perm sec to study hard and shun needless lobbying after poor performance in the promotion exams.
He assured his new cabinet members that he would continue to provide a platform that would engender personal growth while pursuing the overall development of the state.
The recent increase in tuition fees of the Unity schools and that of federal universities has clearly shown Tinubu is all out to destroy the legacy of free education and efforts of Awolowo in the education sector.
It is a common knowledge that Obafemi Awolowo is an exceptional role model to Nigeria in politics. Like Oduduwa, however, Obafemi Awolowo is another legendary patron-saint of the Yoruba race who we regarded as the pioneer of free education.
The easiest language that dominates Awolowo’s worlds and political outlooks, had always been his desire and supreme objective of ensuring that every citizen, no matter his place of birth or religion, must be given equal access and opportunities to free education at all levels.
Apart from food and shelter, however, Awolowo believed that the next greatest ‘Man’s need’ is education. The complexity in that his belief also was that, next to life, education is man’s inalienable right and that, among other rights, it must be provided by the State.
Today, Tinubu has a great opportunity to actualize Awolowo’s dream all over Nigeria. Unfortunately, what Tinubu is offering is huge tuition fees.
Do the dead look back to see what those they left behind have done to their (dead) legacies? . If Chief Awolowo were to look back from his grave and behold what his ‘children’ are doing with his legacy of free education, what would be his thought? Would the sage be happy? Would he beat his chest and say he left behind ‘children’ that are worthy to be called “Awoists”? Or would he simply shake his head and ask the powers that rule the universe why they allowed termites to make a mess of the biggest legacy he bequeathed to this generation.
Today, we are in the season of the locust, where the beneficiaries of Awolowo’s free education that made the children of the very poor to go to school, and amounted to something in life, are now taking education out of the reach of the average people, while the very poor are forgotten.
This wave of increments in Nigerian universities will only create a cycle where only the privilege have access to education.
UNILAG fees got increased by 400% to about 190,000 Naira and the same is about to be replicated across all federal universities in the country. The same kind of exponential increment happened across Unity schools last week.
It is preposterous for Tinubu-led government to make such an increase when the standard of living of people have not increase, people are living below poverty line. The arguments put forward to back such dastardly assault on the Nigerian people are as puerile as they are malicious. How can students be paying 190k in federal universities? The arguments are pedestrian, lack depth and too routine to convince anyone in a time like this.
It sounds rather lame an argument to say money saved from subsidy will be used for infrastructural development, or to present the appearance that subsidy is an unusual phenomenon. The fact remains that governments all over the world subsidise one thing or the other.
There is increased in the price of basic commodities out there. There is no solution in sight to that, what the government is proposing is for more hardship for the working people.
It is safe to say, that our hope has finally been dashed with misplaced and inaccurate priority.
