Kingmakers ratify Lekan Balogun as Olubadan, transfer letter over choice to govt

The uncertainty over who will be crowned the next Olubadan of Ibadan was laid to rest yesterday, as kingmakers ratified the choice of the Otun Olubadan, Sen. Lekan Balogun.

The kingmakers, who are high chiefs and top members of the Olubadan-in-Council, ratified Balogun’s choice at their meeting held at the Olubadan palace, Oja’ba, Mapo, yesterday.

The meeting was convened by the Ibadan South East Local Government, which is in charge of the Olubadan affairs. It organised the formal meeting through the Olubadan Advisory Council.

The meeting was attended by seven high chiefs – Balogun of Ibadan, Owolabi Olakulehin; Asipa Olubadan, Eddy Oyewole; Otun Balogun, Tajudeen Ajibola; Osi Balogun, Lateef Gbadamosi; Ekerin Olubadan, Abiodun Kola-Daisi; Asipa Balogun, Kola Adegbola and Eekerin Balogun, Olubunmi Isioye.

The Iyalode of Ibadan land, High Chief Theresa Oyekanmi, sent a letter endorsing Lekan Balogun. The Olubadan-elect and Sen. Rashidi Ladoja were absent. There is no Seriki at the moment.

Also in attendance was the Head of Ibadan South East Local Government, Mrs. Grace Aremu, who represented the local government.

A source told The Nation that kingmakers put calls to Ladoja to find out why he was the only one absent without an apology, but the calls did not go through. Lekan Balogun was not expected to attend because he was already nominated.

The Nation gathered that the kingmakers would transmit a letter notifying Governor Seyi Makinde of their decision today.

The letter will be submitted through the local government and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The kingmakers declined interview with reporters after the meeting. Reporters were also barred from entering the palace.

Entrances leading to the palace were barricaded by policemen, to avoid breach of law and order.

Ladoja’s lawyer, Mr. Michael Lana, had written to Makinde warning him against approving Lekan Balogun’s choice as the new Olubadan, based on the two suits he said were pending in court over elevation of high chiefs by the late governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2017.

Olubadan Stool: Your Position Is Borne Out Of Courage, Conviction – Lanlehin Commends Makinde

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his position on the Olubadan stool and who becomes next Olubadan of Ibadan.

The statement read: “Like every true Ibadan indigene and lover of truth, equity and justice, I received, on Tuesday, 11 January, 2022, news of the position of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on the ascension to the revered Olubadan stool, with pride and gladness.

“My joy had no bounds in relation to the position of the Governor, on the appropriate, morally-upright and legally-justified route to the stool, devoid of the needless and avoidable crisis thrown up on the matter, by the immediate past administration. If the then government hadn’t attempted to fix an unbroken piece – a time-tested, respected and globally commended institution, we sure wouldn’t be here discussing this.

The Governor’s position, without doubt, is one borne out of courage and conviction, in the defence of the time-honored, fool-proof and established traditional institution of the ancient city. Standing by the truth, particularly given the possible political undercurrents, may not have been easy, but that the governor has chosen to, deserves commendation.

Allow our dear Sylvester’s soul rest peacefully- Dowen College appeals to public

The management of Dowen College, Lagos has appealed to members of the public to stop spreading false information against the school over the recent death of Sylvester Oromoni, Jnr, its student that died under controversial circumstances on November 30, 2021.

In a statement released on Monday, January 10, the school authorities say the public should allow late Sylvester to rest in peace. The school authorities mentioned that they decided to remain silent since Oromoni’s passing because they wanted experts, law enforcement agencies, the government, and medical authorities, among others to do their jobs and unearth the truth about the incident.

The statement read “At this point, we respectfully request that all those who have consistently, misguidedly and maliciously pushed false information should desist immediately and allow our dear Sylvester’s soul rest peacefully in our Lord’s arms.

“The longstanding integrity, values and processes the school worked tirelessly to maintain over the past 24 years were unfairly called to question and dragged through the mud since.”

The school authorities said the result of the autopsy conducted on the deceased revealed that there was “no bodily harm, no intoxication, but rather that the young boy suffered and died of pre-existing health conditions that had not been treated.”

“Today the truth wins, our faith wins and our integrity wins. We pray that no school or organisation ever has to experience what we have been going through.” the statement added

Last week, the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, held a press conference where he mentioned that the two autopsies carried out on late Sylvester’s body concluded he died a natural death.

The family of the deceased however disagree. They argue that the deceased just before his death mentioned the names of five students who attacked him and forcefully gave him something to drink. The family’s lawyer, Femi Falana said the first autopsy conducted on late Sylvester showed he suffered acute lung injury due to chemical intoxication

This is the last time there will be a controversy on who should be the next Olubadan.

Yoruba Council Of Elders Backs Tinubu, Says He Is Qualified To Contest For President

The Secretary-General of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Dr. Kunle Olajide, has said that Bola Tinubu has what it takes to be Nigeria’s president. Speaking with The Guardian in Ibadan, Olajide said Tinubu has given a full account of himself in politics and has widespread support base, which he said is an added advantage.

Olajide said: “He has given a full account of himself. He has a very widespread support across the entire country. He has been in politics for a long time and has done very well in politics. I don’t know why the Yoruba should not support him. Without being immodest, we are about the most sophisticated and liberal in the country.

“Other aspirants from the Southwest are likely to show up and then we have to look at the competence of each one of them, the capacity, character and ability to mobilise support. The Yoruba won’t want to support a failure. So, I think it is too premature now to say categorically what the Yoruba would do.”

OAU student: Adedoyin’s lawyer demands probe of Oriyomi Hamzat for cyberbullying, defamation

The head of the legal team representing Dr Ramon Adedoyin, the owner of Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife, Abiodun Williams, has petitioned Osun state police command, demanding the probe of a journalist, Oriyomi Hamzat, for cyberbullying and defamation.

Williams in the petition addressed to the state Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode, obtained in Osogbo on Monday, also called for the probe of Hamzat’s phone log, alleging that a police operative was divulging critical information to the journalist regarding the probe into the death of Timothy Adegoke, a Master’s student of Obafemi Awolowo University, at the Hilton Hotel.

The lawyer also said Hamzat had been misleading and inciting the public against police authorities through social media since investigation commenced into the circumstances surrounding Adegoke’s death.

The petition read in parts, “We sadly observed that in the video titled ‘More Update on Dr Rahman Adedoyin and Timothy Adegoke Murder Case’ posted on the same channels in November 2021, Mr Oriyomi Hamzat placed a call to a person that appears to be one of your officers in the Anti-Kidnapping Squad.“Osun State Command, who in turn divulged critical information on the ongoing police investigations to thousands of viewers around the world.“This is not only highly unprofessional, but it is also an outright act of gross irresponsibility. We are of the opinion that if Mr Oriyomi Hamzat’s phone number and call logs are subjected to diligent investigation, the identity or identities of some of your men that are sabotaging your commendable efforts on this case may be revealed.“Finally, sir, we humbly demand that Mr Oriyomi Hamzat be invited, questioned and possible criminal charges filed against him for defamation, character assassination, cyberbullying, misinformation and inciting the public against the police authority in a manner that may derail police investigations and cause.

2023: We Don’t Want Over-aged Politicians Like Atiku, Tinubu – Ohanaeze

Chuks Ibegbu, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, should not run for President in 2023.

Ibegbu said Tinubu and Atiku should drop their ambition due to their age.

Speaking exclusively with journalists today, Ibegbu said Atiku, Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo should pick a credible presidential candidate from the Southeast.

He noted that the rigorous nature of the Presidency wouldn’t allow the likes of Tinubu and Atiku to perform optimally at their age.

“The Presidency we need should be a young, dynamic person with the energy to move around. Look at Buhari with all the killings in his State; he can’t move around because age is not on his side. He may be mentally sound, but he’s physically comatose.

“Tinubu did his bit in Lagos when he was governor; he was vibrant then, but age is not on his side now. Tinubu is almost 90 years old now; forget about what he is saying about his age. He should be about 80 something but claiming to be 60 something. Age is not on his side now.
