NLC storms LP office, demands Abure’s resignation

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national transition committee descended upon the headquarters of the Labour Party in Abuja on Tuesday, with a singular demand – the immediate resignation of the National Chairman, Julius Abure. Led by the acting Chairman of the transition committee, Aduwaheed Omar, the union members marched to the party’s secretariat, passionately chanting solidarity songs and calling for Abure’s ouster.

The main bone of contention for the NLC was the expiration of Abure’s tenure as the party’s chairman. According to the protesters, it was a matter of principle and adherence to proper governance that compelled them to demand for a fresh leadership at the helm of the Labour Party.

The atmosphere outside the LP office was intense as the NLC members stood their ground, demanding accountability and transparency from the party leadership. Omar, in a brief but firm statement, emphasized the need for a seamless transition and a renewed focus on the collective welfare of the labour force.

As the standoff continued, supporters and passersby gathered around the scene, eager to witness the unfolding drama. The pressure on Abure to resign mounted as the day progressed, with the transition committee vowing not to back down until their demands were met.

The fate of Julius Abure and the future of the Labour Party now hang in the balance, as Nigerians keenly watch the developments following the bold move by the NLC transition committee.

Ogun State government has acknowledged the outbreak of cholera in the State, as it declared its readiness to contain the spread of the disease effectively and efficiently.

It said 25 cases have been reported in seven local government areas with one death.

Addressing journalists at a press conference on Monday at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, alongside his Environment counterpart, Mr. Ola Oresanya, named the local governments as Ado-Odo/Ota, Remo North, Odeda, Sagamu, Ijebu-North, Ewekoro and Obafemi-Owode.

According to Dr. Coker, her Ministry is collaborating with relevant stakeholders from the Ministries of Environment, Information and Education, Water Corporation, private hospital owners, emergency services, among others.

“Emergency Operations Centre, having been activated earlier, is now in response mode, each MDA involved in the response is carrying out its responsibilities to curtail and control the outbreak. The Ministry and local government areas, waste, and environmental sanitation department is carrying out activities to curb open defecation and improve environmental hygiene.

“Medication and essential consumables have been repositioned at LGAs and other strategic health facilities to provide hitch free, quality treatment that is free in all government facilities.

“Cholera sanitation materials are being shared to all electronic platforms, including social media, radio, and television. The Ministry of Information and the risk communication pillar are working hard to engage the public on prevention practices, good hygiene, and sanitation,” the commissioner noted.

She identified contaminated food and drinks, unhygienic sanitary conditions and poor personal hygiene as some of the risk factors of the disease, imploring the people to imbibe hand hygiene, washing of food, vegetables, fruits properly before eating as well as avoid open defecation so as not to contact the sickness.

She noted that the State Government was aware of the threat poised by the outbreak and was at all times at alert by putting in place adequate preparation to protect the lives and health of all residents, adding that this has helped to minimize the impact of the outbreak when compared with other states.

The commissioner emphasized that the federal government through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been supportive in the areas of technical assistance and in supplying protective gears to health officials.

While calling on the general public to visit any government health facility for proper examination if they pass watery stool more than twice within eight hours, the the commissioner urged them to call the following telephone numbers 08038642812; 07034214893 and 08084250881 for prompt response.

Contributing, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, noted that since cholera would be transmitted through untreated water, his Ministry has despatched its officials with testing kits to test boreholes and other sources of water supply, just as attention would be paid to those producing sachets water.

The environment commissioner also disclosed that public toilets are being built across the State to discourage open defecation while landlords and house owners are being encouraged to provide toilet facilities in their houses.

The representative of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Oluwole Majekodunmi, said no death has been recorded, while monitoring of schools has been intensified with teachers and learners encouraged to make hand washing a habit while the environment should be kept clean at times.

Rumblings In Oyo Assembly As Makinde Gives Nod For Suspension Of 11 Lawmakers

The Oyo State Assembly led by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin may soon announce the suspension of 11 lawmakers who were believed to be working against the House leadership and the directives of Governor Seyi Makinde.

The alleged erring lawmakers include:
Olorunpoto Oluwafemi Cephas representing Oyo East/Oyo West state constituency, Olufunke Comforter, lawmaker representing Ibadan North constituency I, and Ibadan Northeast constituency 1 lawmaker, Hon. Abiodun Babalola,

Others are, Waheed Akintayo, a lawmaker representing the Oluyole state constituency; Bisi Oluranti Micheal lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North; Ibraheem Shittu, representing Saki West; Abdulazeez Musbau, a lawmaker representing Kajola state constituency; Jimoh Lukman, lawmaker representing Oorelope state constituency; Ayinde Waliu lawmaker representing Irepo/Olorunsogo; Olajide Operinde, lawmaker representing Afijio state constituency and Dauda Olalere; lawmaker representing Ibadan North West.

This was contained in a report made available today to ODUDUWA NEWS by Westerndailynews.com that the state governor gave his support to the leadership of the House for the suspension of the alleged erring lawmakers.

According to reliable sources, the accused lawmakers, mostly first-timers have been tagged as rebels, however, the new development is supposedly aimed at cutting the lawmakers to size.

A source close to the governor said the straw that broke the camel’s back for the lawmakers was the petition that was written to the governor against Ogundoyin about their Sallah gifts from the executive.

“The new lawmakers have always felt being cheated in the House of Assembly, so they felt to fight for what they claim is their rights.

The source said the new lawmakers who had always not been comfortable with the leadership of Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin, took their grievance to the governor through a petition, complaining about the alleged insincerity of the speaker.

The lawmakers in their petition complained about the decision of the speaker to procure the approved lawmakers’ cars from an unauthorized dealer with no records of dealing with new and standard automobiles.

The lawmakers reportedly claimed that Ogundoyin has already negotiated foreign used 2022 model cars instead of approved 2023 model brand new cars for all the lawmakers.

It was gathered that the said lawmakers while registering their annoyance had told the speaker, Ogundoyin to patronize recognized automobile dealers such as Elizade Motors rather than dealing with road side car sellers.

It was also gathered in the petition made to the governor, the lawmakers also accused Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin of withholding Sallah funds released by the governor.

From the information gathered, Governor Seyi Makinde did not release any funds for the House of Assembly for Sallah against the lawmaker’s claim, as well as being indisposed about the petition raised against the speaker.

It was however gathered that the governor’s decision to keep aloof from State assembly issues has installed more power on the speaker and his decision as of this evening is to suspend all the alleged erring lawmakers.

MURIC Reacts As CAN Sanctions Church Over Attack On Islamic Cleric, Others In Iseyin

It was gathered that on the eve of Sallah, Alfa got back from the praying ground and proceeded to slaughter his ram on a path which he created, he was confronted by his neighbour who is a Pastor as to why he was slaughtering ram on the path, the Alfa responded that it’s a portion of his compound that he just decided not to fence so as to avail neighbours who reside behind him a passage and he decided to slaughter his ram there because it is his land. The pastor became mad at the response and called his child who was said to be a soldier recruit and he came to the venue with accomplices and they started descending on the Alfa and his relatives.

Muslim Rights Council Calls for Justice

The chairman of CAN in Iseyin local government, Apostle Sunday Ogundairo, confirmed the incident involving the pastor and some congregation members who attacked Mr Sulaimon AbdulAzeez and his two wives.

He mentioned that similar issues had arisen in the past year, but recent events on Sunday, June 16, 2024, escalated tensions.

Regarding disciplinary action, Ogundairo affirmed that CAN has sanctioned the pastor and mandated him to relocate his church.

Meanwhile, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, Executive Director of The Muslim Rights Council (MURIC), attributed the altercation to a misunderstanding over noise pollution previously mediated by the Iseyin king.

He criticized the involvement of soldiers, labelling their actions unjust and inhumane.
