Court Orders Reinstatement of Sacked Lagos Assembly Clerk

The National Industrial Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the reinstatement of Olalekan Onafeko, the sacked Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The ruling follows an ex parte application filed by Onafeko through his counsel, Yusuf Nurudeen, in a case against the Lagos State Government, Lagos State Civil Service Commission, Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Attorney-General of Lagos State, and Mr. Ottun Babatunde.

Onafeko served as the Clerk of the House until January 13, when Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was removed as Speaker, leading to the election of then Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as the new Speaker. Following Obasa’s removal, Onafeko also lost his position, with Babatunde Ottun appointed as his acting replacement.

In the suit marked NICN/LA/23/2025, Onafeko sought an interim injunction preventing the defendants from recognizing any individual, including Babatunde, as the Clerk pending the hearing of a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

Granting the application, Justice M. N. Esowe issued an ex parte order directing Babatunde to cease parading himself as Clerk. The judge further ruled that the status quo ante bellum—referring to the situation prior to the crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly—should be maintained.

“That both parties shall maintain the peace and status quo ante bellum until the motion on notice is heard and determined,” Esowe ruled.

The hearing of the motion on notice is scheduled for March 3, 2024.

Abioye stated that PDP candidates won all the councillorship seats in all 332 wards in the state and also secured victory in the chairmanship elections across all 30 local government council areas.

Ogun To Receive World’s Largest Protein Producer Of $2.5bn Investment in Nigeria

Ogun, Nigeria’s top investment destination, is set to reap huge benefits as the largest protein producer in the world, JBS of Brazil, has indicated interest in investing $2.5bn in the livestock subsector of Nigeria’s economy.

The Controlling Shareholder of the company, Mr. Wesley Batista, gave this indication when officials of his firm, led by the Controlling Shareholder of EMN, Mr. John Coumantaros, visited the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta on Sunday.

Mr. Batista, who described Nigeria as the hub of Africa with the largest population, noted the enormous potentials that exist in the country in terms of human and natural resources, and said they were ready to bring their knowledge and expertise in the area of livestock to bear in the nation’s economy.

He said: “We have been talking and learning about Nigeria. We had the privilege to meet the Nigerian delegation in Brazil when President Bola Tinubu visited our country. We see Nigeria as the hub of Africa with a very large population.

“Though it is our first time in Nigeria, we feel that we have a lot of similarities between Brazil and Nigeria. We have a very good impression so far about Nigeria and Nigerians.

“We are serious about coming to Nigeria to invest in beef, pork, chicken, among others. We see growth prospects in Nigeria and what Nigerian leaders are doing in encouraging investors to come and make significant investments here. We can bring our knowledge and expertise to bear in Nigeria’s economy.”

Giving a brief background of the company, Mr. Wesley Batista disclosed that it started in 1953 with slaughtering one cow per day and grew to 600 heads of cattle in one beef plant per day in 1957, becoming the largest beef player in Brazil in the 1990s.

“In the beginning of 2000, we started looking for opportunities to go beyond Brazil, and in 2005, we started in Argentina, and in 2007, we went to the United States and Australia. JBS is our biggest business under our holding company,” he added.

Batista said the organization currently has a revenue of about $75bn and 280,000 direct members who operate hundreds of facilities across Brazil, the USA, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France, among others.

According to the Controlling Shareholder, the company processes 80,000 heads of cattle, 15 million chickens, about 25,000 heads of lamb per day, and also produces packaged products like sausages and bacon, while they also hold interests in other sectors like energy, the paper-producing industry, banking and finance, as well as soap and toiletries.

Giving a brief about the State titled “Unlocking the Future of Livestock Processing and Other Opportunities,” Governor Abiodun said the state, with more than 16,000 square kilometers, offers an ideal location for investments as it provides unique connections to the 17 southern states as well as the northern parts of the country.

“We have provided, in terms of infrastructure, 1,000 kilometers of highways and the best-constructed airport in Nigeria, specially dedicated to agro imports and exports.

“We are number one in non-oil, as two-thirds of the state sits on limestone. Our state is the third-largest producer of cement in Africa, trailing behind Morocco, which is second, and Egypt, which is first.

“The State also has gold, silica, bitumen, and others which are too numerous to mention. We have gas reticulation more than any other state. There are two major gas pipelines that crisscross our state,” he stated.

Governor Abiodun noted that Ogun is going into power generation and distribution, assuring that industries and companies that operate in the State would have access to the cheapest power supply in the country.

On the acquisition of land, the governor said it has been made seamless as land title documents would be made ready within 30 days, assuring that his administration has invested significantly in security to guarantee the safety of lives and properties of those who live and work in the State.

While assuring that his administration would collaborate with the government of President Bola Tinubu to ensure food sufficiency and security, Governor Abiodun said efforts would be made to reduce food scarcity and inflation in the State and country.

He lauded the company for rising from humble beginnings to become the largest protein producer in the world, saying his administration is looking forward to seeing the company establish itself in the State.

The leader of the delegation, John Coumantaros, in his remarks, applauded the governor for opening up the State in the area of infrastructure, which he noted has pushed up investments and brought more development to the State.

He said President Tinubu’s administration has set forth on changing the macro conditions of the country where everything works properly by embarking on the development of infrastructure corridors from East to West and North to South, adding that the JBS group was in the State to assess its viability for investment.

“Tinubu has made it possible to attract investors like this, and Governor Abiodun is here to make the program possible because protein is critical for the growth of Nigeria, building modern slaughterhouses, establishing piggery and poultry farms, and going back to see how we can produce maize and soya beans of good yields and its value chain from farm to customers, making the ecosystem beneficial to the growth of the country and the entire Gross Domestic Product,” he noted.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), Aisha Rimi, on her part, said the meeting is a follow-up to the technical team sent by the company to assess the potentials of the State for investment, adding that the company is ready to invest $2.5bn in the next five years in livestock, and Ogun State would be one of the States to benefit.

DSS Arrests Three Lagos Assembly Workers Over Assault On Officers During Speakership Crisis

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested three individuals linked to the assault on its operatives during the recent unrest at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The crisis erupted amid speculation over an alleged attempt by Mudashiru Obasa to forcefully return as Speaker after his removal several weeks ago. Tensions escalated as lawmakers reportedly mobilized supporters to the Assembly complex, where some individuals attacked DSS operatives stationed there on the directive of the Assembly leadership to secure the facility.

According to security sources, a thorough review of CCTV footage enabled the identification of three suspects involved in the attack. The individuals arrested include Ibrahim Olanrewaju Abdulkareem, a photographer, along with Adetu Adekunle Samsudeen and Adetola Oluwatosin Fatimoh, both staff members attached to the Assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms. The trio were tracked and arrested at different locations in Lagos during the week.

“The suspects have since confessed to the crime and will soon be charged to court,” a DSS source disclosed.

Further reports reveal that a leaked memo from the Lagos Assembly, dated February 14, 2025, and addressed to the DSS Director in the state and other security agencies, warned of a looming security threat. The memo alleged that Obasa had plotted to reinstate himself forcefully on February 18, 2025.

The Assembly management viewed the situation as a significant security risk to the legislature and its members, prompting the deployment of security operatives to maintain order.

As investigations continue, the arrests mark a critical step in maintaining law and order within the Lagos State legislative complex.

Tinubu Flags-Off Reconstruction of Lagos-Ibadan-Sagamu Expressway

President Bola Tinubu has flagged off the reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Dual Carriageway, section 1, and section 1 of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway.

Performing the flag-off at Sagamu, Ogun State, President Tinubu said the project, which would be completed in 24 months, would cover underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo, while flyover bridges would be constructed at Kilometer 16 around the Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) and Kilometer 37 at Makun around Sagamu.

Pedestrian bridges, the president informed, would be constructed at Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption Camp, while the construction of the 60 kilometers remaining portion of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway from Sagamu Interchange to Itele would be flagged off to ensure the safety of road users.

Represented by the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the president acknowledged the strategic importance of the road as the busiest, providing a direct link between Lagos, the commercial capital of the nation, and the 17 southern states of the federation.

He said: “The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is not just another road; it is the busiest highway in Nigeria and the gateway to the hinterland, serving as the primary link between Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital, and the rest of the country.

“The federal government is committed to leveraging our natural resources by linking rural roads to urban centers, commercial hubs, and industrial corridors. The strategic roles align with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commitment to rebuilding, expanding, and modernizing our national road networks, railways, and airports, which is critical to the nation’s economic prosperity.”

President Tinubu emphasized the importance of road infrastructure as fundamental to the socio-economics of any nation; it sustains economic growth, facilitates mobility, and enhances quality of life.

However, he regretted the long neglect of the road, which has claimed many lives as a result of its poor condition.

He said that by upgrading and expanding the expressway, the federal government is achieving a reduction in travel time, improving efficiency and productivity, enhancing safety, and facilitating ease of doing business in the country.

The president maintained that the inclusion of the Sagamu-Ore in this phase further underscored the Renewed Hope Agenda’s vision of ensuring that national road networks meet international standards and support aspirations for economic expansion and industrial development.

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, said: “In the Lagos-Ibadan project, we have section 2, phase 2, and part of what we are doing today is that phase 2, which was awarded to Julius Berger. When we could not resolve our differences in terms of price, we terminated the job.

“What we are doing today is part of the Lagos-Ibadan project, which is phase 2, and it includes the works on Magboro underpass, Warewa underpass, Arepo underpass, Sagamu, and Iperu; that is 12 kilometers by 2, which is 24.

“The next phase of this job is also 48 kilometers by 2, that takes off from Iperu and gets to Ijebu-Ode. That is the Sagamu-Ore road.”

The Minister directed that no payment should be made to contractors without an Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate, adding that it must be valid at the time of payment to the contractor, and the Performance Bond must also be valid before any payment is made to the contractor.

Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Hon. Akin Alabi, said the House is poised to work with the Ministry to ensure that Nigerians have access to good road networks, stating that the road is not just for the people of Ogun State alone as it would affect the economic lives of Nigerians.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, expressed gratitude to the federal government for including footbridges in the project, assuring that the State would work with the contractor and federal government officials to ensure the speedy completion of the job.

The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, while calling for the construction of two flyovers at the Sagamu junction and at the police divisional junction, also called for the construction of a fire station to respond to fire incidents on the road.

Governor Abiodun later performed the flagging-off of the project on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

Ogun Police Hints On Prosecution As Wife Detained For Husband’s Death Narrates Ordeal

Iyanuoluwa Adedeji, the 22-year-old lady who allegedly stabbed her husband, Jimoh Azeez to death on December 31st, 2024, shares her side of the story.

She claims she had endured repeated physical abuse and that on the day of the incident, a fight broke out after her husband accused her of infidelity. According to her, he picked up a knife, and in the struggle, the blade accidentally wounded him.

She insists the injury was minor but says her Jimoh believed a charm he had used made him vulnerable, and the required antidote was not available.

Despite rushing him to two hospitals, he was pronounced dead at the second facility. Following the incident, Iyanuoluwa turned herself in to the police and is now in detention as Police authorities continue their investigation, with plans to charge her in court thereafter.

Osun LG Poll: Police Wants Immediate Suspension Of Elections As Adeleke Gives OSSIEC ‘Go Ahead’

The Nigerian Police Force has advised Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke to suspend the local government elections in the State hinging its decision on the intelligence report that there might be violence and bloodshed if the election is held.

The statement was made available today by Nigeria Police Force via its official Twitter handle as read in part:

“The Nigeria Police Force has received credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats should the planned Local Government elections proceed in Osun State. These reports gathered from joint intelligence gathering reveal that various groups, including political elements and other interest parties, are mobilizing to instigate unrest, disrupt public peace, and undermine the democratic order. Given this imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability.

“The Force has assessed the current security landscape and determined that proceeding with the elections under these volatile conditions could escalate into widespread unrest, endangering lives and property. The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, is fully prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order. However, to avert unnecessary confrontation and safeguard the democratic process, it is in the best interest of all stakeholders that the elections be stood down.

“Beyond the security concerns, it is also imperative to consider the legal clarification by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on the extant judicial pronouncements concerning Local Government administration in Osun State with regards to the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on the 10th of February 2025 which stands to have nullified the Federal High Court’s previous decision and reinforces the position that the elections, as presently contemplated, lack a firm legal foundation.

“In light of the combination of heightened security threats and the existing legal complexities, the Nigeria Police Force advises the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the planned elections immediately. The NPF reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes are upheld in accordance with the law.

“We urge all stakeholders, including political parties, to act with restraint and prioritize the well-being of citizens during this period”.

Osun High Court Orders OSSIEC To Proceed With LG Election Tomorrow Amid Controversies

An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo has directed the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to proceed with the local government election set for Saturday, February 22, 2025.

The order came after a legal suit brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against OSIEC and its Chairman, Hashim Abioye. The court, led by Justice A. Aderigbigbe, ruled that there is a vacancy in all 30 local government areas of the state, a decision that followed a prior ruling by the Federal High Court.

The court found that the local government election held on October 15, 2022, was invalid and had been voided by the Federal High Court in case FHC/CS/OS/103/2022 (ACTION PEOPLES PARTY VS. INEC). The verdict was further upheld by the Court of Appeal in Appeal No: CA/AK/226M/2024 (ALLIED PEOPLE MOVEMENT VS. ACTION PEOPLES PARTY) in January 2025. This ruling confirmed that the elected officials from the invalidated election were to be removed, leaving vacancies in the local councils.

The court also ordered that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, the Army, the DSS, the Amotekun Corps, the Vigilante Group, and other agencies, provide full security during and after the election to ensure a smooth process.
