Oyeyemi said the suspects, Wasiu Adenuga, Michael John and Moruf Alaba, were arrested following a report lodged at the Odogbolu Divisional Police Headquarters by one Kemi Olukoya.

He added that Olukoya reported that while she was on her new site supervising construction workers, a group of eight men invaded the place, started shooting indiscriminately and chased away the workers.

The PPRO said, “She (Olukoya) stated further that the hoodlums also snatched at gunpoint her bag containing the sum of N500,000 and her telephones valued at N40,000.

“Upon the report, the DPO, Odogbolu Division, SP Adeniyi Awokunle, mobilised his men and moved to the scene, and on getting there, the hoodlums were seen escaping through the nearby bush, but they were chased after and one of them, Wasiu Adenuga, was apprehended.

“The victim identified the three of them as members of the gang that attacked her and her workers.”

Sickle Cell Disorder, Not A Death Sentence – University Don

The Head, Department of Medicine at the General Hospital, Ijede, Dr. Ogo-Oluwa Adeyemi, has asserted that Sickle Cell Disorder is not a death sentence as those diagnosed with sickle cell disease have the tendency of living longer than expected due to improvement in medical and personal care.

Dr. Adeyemi, who disclosed this at an event organised by the hospital to mark the year 2021 World Sickle Cell Day at the facility, maintained that if people with the disorder receive good treatment, erase their fears, are adequately informed and able to manage crisis effectively, the probability of attaining the age of 80 years or more is very possible.

The HoD described Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) as a genetic abnormality that causes dysfunction in oxygen-carrying capacity of the red blood cells and reduces the lifespan of the blood, stressing that “Sickle cell disorder is caused because the inherited genes, one each from the two parents are defective, resulting in the shortage of healthy red blood cells and blockage of blood flow”.

Crisis, according to Adeyemi, can start from infancy and the earliest manifestation for most children is the hand and foot syndrome, noting that those who live in rural areas or do not receive adequate treatment have tropical splenomegaly syndrome (the enlargement of the spleen and liver) making them have very big abdomen, looking malnourished, experiencing frequent pain crisis, irritability, anaemia and stunted growth, among others.

He averred that people living with sickle cell disorder are prone to other diseases like hypertension and diabetes, adding that some of them may also end up being infected with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and a few other communicable diseases because of their frequent exposure to blood transfusion.

Adeyemi revealed that one out of four Nigerians has a sickle cell trait, adding that the efforts to curtail the spread of the disease by reducing the birth of children with the disorder are being undermined by brain drain, quackery, substandard laboratories, fake reagents, moral and ethical dilemma, wrong laboratory diagnosis and faulty machines among others.

He, however, noted that early diagnosis and comprehensive health check through an enhanced system goes a long way in helping to determine the genotype of newborns so that prompt healthcare management, treatment and monitoring will commence in earnest in order to prevent frequent crisis and early death among sufferers.

While declaring that everybody has a part to play in ensuring a decline in the number of children born with sickle cell disorder, Adeyemi charged those living with the disorder, their parents and caregivers to erase their fears, get informed and manage their crisis adequately to live a normal and fruitful life as everyone else in society.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said the state can be among the food baskets in the country if its potentials are fully harnessed.

Governor Akeredolu spoke on Thursday during the commissioning of 18 units of SEM-919 Motor Grader for the use of the 18 Local Government Councils in the State.

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa; Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bamidele Oleyelogun; Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Olugbenga Ale; Special Adviser to Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye; Commissioner for information and Orientation, Mr. Donald Ojogo, other members of the state executive council; APC leaders, all the 18 local government chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, top government officials among several other dignitaries.

The Governor said one of his administration’s policy thrusts encapsulated in the REDEEMED Agenda is Rural and Agricultural Development.

“Infrastructure is, therefore, the bedrock of development of any society. Essentially, rural infrastructure encompasses among others, rural roads, water supply and electricity.

“Ondo State, no doubt, is an agrarian society. Our belief, therefore, is that if our potential is adequately harnessed, the State can be among the food baskets in the country.

“This informed our decision to make rural and agricultural development as well as provision of massive infrastructure part of our key programmes. Since the inception of our administration in 2017, tremendous efforts have been made in areas of provision of rural water and electricity across the State.

“The State equally bought into the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) which focuses on rehabilitation of rural roads and associated capacity building of institutions with the mandate to provide and maintain rural transport infrastructure. The State has completed all its paper work and the programme will soon fully take off,” the Governor said.

Governor Akeredolu disclosed that each local government council will have one grader, noting that rentage of graders by the council chairmen to grade rural roads has now become a thing of the past.

He called for proper use and deployment of the equipment, particularly in grading rural roads to ensure easy movement of farm produce to the urban areas and reduce the cost of foodstuffs.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Chief Imam of Akure Kingdom, Sheik Yayi Akorede and the Chairman, Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba Frederick Akinruntan represented by Jegun of Ile-Oluji, Oba Oluwole Adetimehin, lauded the Governor for providing good leadership in the state, even as they encouraged him to continue his good work in the interest of the state.

Iwo-Road Mayhem: Mother of Slain Phone Seller Pleads For Justice

Mother of the man allegedly killed by members of Park Management System (PMS) in Iwo-road, Ibadan on Wednesday, Alhaja Salimot Azeez and the entire family have called on the state government to hep them get justice.

Alhaja Salimot pleaded for justice on Friday while speaking with journalists in Ibadan.

She said the family has visual evidences where the leader of PMS in the state, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi popularly called Auxiliary asked his members to attack traders in the complex.

It was reported that two people including Rahman Azeez were killed on Wednesday when members of the PMS attacked Iwo-road complex.

“They used to defecate and smoke Indian hemp in my complex when I newly bought it. They have been using that place for motor park for years.

“Former Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta intervened and resolved it that we should allow them to use a part of the entrance and I allowed them. Even our DPO at that time, Ilori took photographs of the way the commercial drivers were disturbing us to the Commissioner of Police and he resolved it amicably for us.

“Even with the fact that I gave them space, they were not satisfied. My child that was killed was a graduate. He graduated from Lead City University. My first born they attempted to kill graduated from a university in London. He said he could not do the kind of job people are doing in London and that was why he came back home.

“He has a shop where he is selling phones in the complex. He was never a cultist. He was a phone dealer. I don’t know what I did for Auxiliary that made him killed my son. He knows me and I usually give him something. I do give him whatever he ask from me. This is a great lost.

“A 37-years old boy was killed just like that. Government should help me to get those who killed my son. I want justice. I want to know the person that killed my son when he didn’t fight or drag anything with them,” Mother of the deceased said.

The elder brother to the victim who is also the manager of the said complex, Mr. Hammed Azeez while speaking on the incident said he was the main target of the members of PMS who killed his brother.

“I was the one they were after. If they were able to lay their hands on me that day, I wouldn’t have been here today. I don’t know why the man is still on the street now.

“By now, he should be in remand. That man is a dangerous beast. I don’t know why Oyo State Government should have made an ex- convict a leader of a group tormenting and killing people. What kind of system are we running?” he lamented.
