TESCOM: More Than 400 PhD Holders Teaching in Oyo Secondary Schools – Chairman

It has been confirmed to the newsmen that over 400 holders of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree currently teach in public secondary schools in Oyo State.

In an interview with The Nation, the Chairman of the state’s Post-Primary School Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Pastor Akinade Alamu, said the state followed standard procedure in the recent recruitment of 5,000 teachers into its secondary schools.

They include 150 physically challenged persons.

He explained that 140,000 candidates applied for the job but that only 6,500 scored 50 per cent and above in the computer-based test (CBT) conducted to screen them.

Of the number, 5,000 of the applicants were eventually employed after passing the oral interview and credential scrutiny.

Giving further details, the commission’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Grace Oderinde, explained that 167 of the newly recruited teachers hold PhD in various fields.

The permanent secretary said 550 of the successful candidates were non-indigenes of Oyo State because Governor Seyi Makinde insisted that only the best must be recruited into the schools, irrespective of their states of origin.

“The governor had no candidate. He directed that anyone to be recruited must pass the test and make the cut-off point. It didn’t matter if the candidate was the governor’s brother or sister.

“With that, TESCOM has set the standard, and I am sure that other agencies will emulate us. This government values merit because of its commitment to bringing the desired change into the system,” she said.

According to her, 400 applicants hold First-Class degrees in various disciplines.

Those who did not study Education were given two years to complete a post-graduate diploma in the discipline.

Mrs. Oderinde said the new teachers were posted according to the needs of the various zones across the state.

CBN Declares Founder of Aboki FX Website, Segun Oniwinde Wanted Over Exchange Rate

The Federal Government through its bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday said it will shut down the operations of ‘Aboki FX’ over the exchange rate.

‘Aboki FX’ is a website that provides currency exchange information, which the apex bank has described as an illegal platform.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, stated this after the Monetary policy committee’s two-day meeting in Abuja, revealing plans to arrest and prosecute the owner of the platform, Olusegun Oniwinde.

Emefiele accused Oniwinde of sabotaging Nigeria’s economy, vowing that Nigerian government would collaborate with other security agencies to track him down.

“I have given instructions to our experts to go after his website and let it be clear that we will go after him because we can’t allow this to continue,” he said.

“There was a particular time I asked our colleagues to find the so-called owner of ‘Aboxi FX’ that we want to engage him to understand his module, his basis and how he came about advertising those rates.

“We find him as a Nigerian who lives in England and conducts this nefarious and criminal activity on our economy. It is an economic sabotage and we will pursue him. Where ever he is, we will report him to international security agencies. Mr Oniwinde, we will find you!”

The CBN boss also decried the security challenges in the country, lamenting that Bureau de Change operators were encouraging kidnapping, banditry and terrorism though the sale of FOREX.

He, however, noted that the apex bank will not continue to sell FOREX to people who purchase arms to hurt Nigerians.

According to Emefiele, the financial markets regulator is determined to eliminate the activities of illegal FOREX traders.

Gbajabiamila Recants, Says He Never Compared IPOB, Yoruba Nation Agitators with Boko Haram, ISWAP

The Speaker of The House of Representatives has recanted his words on the comparison of Yoruba Nation and Biafra Agitators with Bokoharam.

This was contained in a statement released and made available to newsmen through his Media Aide, Lasisi Yussuf as read in part:

“It has come to the attention of the Office of the Speaker, House of Representatives, that some media reports on Wednesday, September 15, claimed that the Speaker, in his welcome address to his colleagues at Wednesday’s plenary, purportedly said IPOB and Yoruba nation agitators are the same with Boko haram.

“In view of the impression created by the said reports, it has become necessary to clarify that the Speaker, in his speech, never mentioned any group.

“For the records, the Speaker said some miscreants and criminals are taking advantage of the separationist agitations to carry their activities.

Hereunder is what the Speaker said:

“We must now add to these concerns an emerging threat that presents the same clear and present danger. In the South of Nigeria, East and West, MISCREANTS AND CRIMINALS MASQUERADING AS SEPARATIONIST ACTIVISTS have emerged to wreak havoc, take lives and commit economic sabotage against fellow Nigerians and the state.

“These people, in their inclination for devastating violence against fellow citizens, their appetite for the destruction of private property, their disruption of academic activities, commerce, and industry, their propensity for defiling institutions of the state, society and community, their refusal to engage in debate, or to consider the possibility of dissenting opinions and alternative viewpoints, are no different from Boko Haram and ISWAP. Given space and time, they will take our nation down the same path of destruction.”

“From the above, there was nowhere that the Speaker mentioned the name of any group. What was conspicuous in the Speaker’s speech was the focus of the activities of MISCREANTS AND CRIMINALS, and its effect on the country.

The Speaker never condemned secessionists or compared them to terrorists.

“As a matter of fact, the Speaker is not alone on the concern about an apparent emergence of a band of miscreants and criminals as different patriotic Nigerians have expressed similar concerns and even condemned the act of maiming, killing, destruction of property and other criminalities perpetrated by the masqueraders”.

Ikeja Court Orders Oshodi LG To Pay N1m To Motorist Over Extortion of N28,000

An Ikeja High Court has ordered Oshodi Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos to pay N1Million compensation to a motorist, Mr Louis Idahosa for extorting him of N28,000 for allegedly driving against traffic (one-way).

Delivering judgment, Justice Obafemi Adamson said that local governments lack the constitutional power to impound vehicles and to inflict traffic related penalties on road users.

The judge said that threatening, harassing and extorting N28,000 from Idahosa by Oshodi LGA officials and impounding his vehicle under the guise that he drove “one-way” was illegal.

Justice Adamson noted that the applicant’s fundamental human rights as enshrined in Sections 34, 36, 41(1) and 44 the 1999 Constitution was breached by Oshodi LGA.

The judge ordered the LGA to refund the Idahosa of the N28,000 and gave an injunction restraining Oshodi LGA from harassing road users.

“An Order is hereby granted directing the respondents (Oshodi LGA) to refund to the applicant (Idahosa) N28,000 which was extorted from him under the guise that he drove one-way without affording him fair hearing.

“An Order of perpetual injunction is hereby granted restraining the respondent or its agents from harassing, threatening or arresting motorists or road users for traffic offences, imposing fines and impounding vehicles.

“Doing so is ultra vires (beyond legal power or authority) their powers outlined under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” Justice Adamson said.

In addition to the N1million compensation awarded in favour of the applicant for breaching his right to a fair hearing and freedom of movement, Justice Adamson also awarded a cost of N100,000 against the counsel for Oshodi LGA, Mr L. O Mazoke.

Idahosa had via his counsel, Mr Emmanuel Eze filed a fundamental human rights suit dated Sept. 3, 2019 against Oshodi LGA.

According to Eze, Idahosa on Aug. 28, 2019 while being driven by his driver in his Toyota Corolla car with registration number KRD551CZ along Oyetoyo St., in front of the Oshodi/Isolo LGA, they were accosted by six men who were not in uniform.

“They stopped and arrested Idahosa and his driver insisting the driver contravene traffic laws by driving one-way and were taken into the LGA office.

“Idahosa insisted that any crime had been committed, he and his driver should be arraigned in court.

“Officials of the respondent did not agree to an arraignment but resorted to harassing, intimidating and threatening them with continuous detention.

“The applicant was forced to pay N28,000 into the respondents treasury.

“He however discovered that only N25,000 was written on the receipt issued and upon enquiry, he was informed that the outstanding N3,000 was gate pass fee,” Eze said.

Oshodi LGA in court documents however denied extorting Idahosa noting that the persons who arrested and extorted the applicant and his driver were not staff of the LGA.

The LGA also noted that it did not authorise anyone to extort money from the applicant.
