Late Afenifere Spokesman’s Widow, Joe Okei-Odumakin Gives Birth To Twins In US

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, the widow of the late spokesperson of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, was delivered of bouncing twins – a boy and a girl – at a United States of America hospital on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.

This is according to a release posted on her Facebook account on Sunday.

According to the release, the mother and the babies are in excellent health condition.

It reads: “The “miracle” birth fulfilled the wishes of the late Odumakin towards the end of his sojourn on earth to have another baby to be named after him.

“The couple got married in 1997, had their first baby girl in 2000 and the second, a boy, in 2003. While the girl was named after Joe, the boy was named Abraham after the late Afenifere leader, Pa Abraham Adesanya.

“The twins are coming 18 years after the last childbirth.

“After he survived a three-day coma in 2020 and a few months before he succumbed to the illness that eventually but unexpectedly claimed his life, YO, as he is fondly called, developed a strong desire for him and his wife to have another baby.

“Thank God Joe did not dither or procrastinate as she took in just about the time YO took ill and never recovered.

“It was good news that Joe conceived but YO never got to hear the news of his wishes coming to pass as he did not make it out of the ventilator.

“He had, however, prophetically left words concerning what the baby or babies should be called if his wishes materialised.

“YO was so accurate in his predictions that they could be twins (and their sex) that he gave the names of the babies and told his wife how he would raise them.

“While many may interpret this to mean that YO had premonition about his death, it was only a strong desire expressed by him to have babies that he would dot over and who would possibly step into his “aluta” shoes.

“It’s a dream come true!

TASUED shut as students, soldiers clash over alleged assault

Authorities of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Ijagun, Ijebu – Ode in Ogun State have shut down the institution.

They asked students to vacate the campuses immediately following a protest over the alleged assault and arrest of some TASUED students by soldiers.

Soldiers said to be from Sappers Barrack, Ilese on Thursday evening arrested some persons at a military check point close to Conoil Filling Station along the Sagamu-Benin expressway.

The persons, who turned out to be students of TADUED, were taken to the barrack but attempts by the Students Union Government (SUG) to rescue them led to the arrest of the SUG President, Rabiu Sodiq.

He was taken to the barrack, forcing the students to pour into the Sagamu – Ijebu – Ode – Ore expressway on Friday in protest over the detention of their colleagues.

Armoured Personnel Carriers were deployed to the scene as the soldiers fired sporadically into the air to disperse the protesting students.

Vehicular traffic was halted on both sides of the expressway, forcing a standstill for travellers on Friday morning.

The University authorities, fearing the worst, asked the students to immediately vacate the campuses and called on their parents and guardians to make them comply with the directive.

TASUED Assistant Chief Executive Officer and Public Relations Officer, Mrs Odubela Ayotunde, told The Nation: “The Senate of Tai Solarin University of Education Ijagun, Ogun State at its emergency meeting has directed that all Students are to vacate the University’s Campuses immediately.

“Parents are thus advised to contact their wards and ensure they return home forthwith.”

She noted that the decision was sequel to the arrest of some students at a military check point on Thursday, clarifying that the University Management did not at any time invite military personnel or security agencies into the campus.

She also clarified that no student was abducted from any of the University’s campuses or shot dead.

But the SUG Senate President Moradeyo Ifedayo Johnson and Chief Judge Ayobami Kareem alleged soldiers invaded the students’ community and manhandled many of them.

“TASUEDITES who are going by their legitimate and calm businesses were cornered at CONOIL Filling Station, the Express Road that leads to the University second gate.

“They were arrested and assaulted for no reason. To make things worst, the soldiers asked students to bail themselves up with N50, 000 and those who could not do that were detained and taken away (most likely to the barrack).

“As responsible and responsive students’ union officers, upon hearing the ugly development, we swung into action and make frantic efforts to mediate and rescue students from this injustice and assault cum fraudulent exploitation.

“This calm and ideal effort by the students’ union was met with strong resistance by the military men, who assaulted the Students’ Union President.

“The Senate President was also severely injured and many comrades were beaten, whipped and abducted by the military men.

“The Students’ Union abhor this act in its totality, very displeased and frown at the reaction of the custodian of the university to the matter when contacted,” Moradeyo stated

Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu Re-enters Politics, Joins PDP

Momodu announced his move to the PDP in a statement, explaining that his decision was based on the need to contribute meaningfully to the development of the country.

“I have consulted widely. And it is clear to me that given the dangerous and disastrous drift that our nation has experienced in the past six years, the only party from which amends can be made to rectify our situation is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said in the statement released on Friday morning.

“This accords with my vehement opposition to the policies and practices of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its leadership, which has denuded our country of everything we hold dear – national unity, cohesion, security, economic prosperity, educational advancement, social infrastructure, and above all, our cherished moral values.

“For these reasons, I am happy to declare that I am now a full-fledged participating member of the great and patriotic Peoples Democratic Party.”

He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing in delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians,  maintaining that the PDP has landmark achievements to show for their 16-year rule.

“It is deeply saddening and regrettable that some of the biggest and landmark achievements recorded under the PDP administration have been diluted, wasted, or diminished by the present APC government,” he added.

COVID-19 Vaccine is 99.9 Percent Safe – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday urged the people to take advantage of the newly launched exercise by the state government aimed at vaccinating 4 million residents against COVID-19, assuring that the vaccine is 99.9 percent safe.

The Governor, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the 21st National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, said a simulation exercise recently conducted revealed that the state may enter into the fourth wave by December if care is not taken.

“We are out of the third wave but if we are not careful, the simulation we conducted shows that we can have a fourth wave in December. So, why is it a concern? In December, we usually have huge traffic of travellers. Lagos continues to remain the hub of international travel; we continue to remain the hub of inland waterways services because of the ports here.

“Lagos even continues to remain the hub of land borders. So, Lagos carries the air, the sea and land borders. Lagos cannot sit back and just fold its arms and not do anything,” he said.

Giving details of the vaccination exercise tagged “Count Me In,” the Governor said from Monday, the vaccine would be available in over 800 locations, just as he appealed to people who are yet to get their jabs to take advantage of the exercise, as the vaccine is safe.

“I want to appeal to all of you that have not taken the vaccine that from Monday, the vaccine will be available in over 800 locations. Right now, it’s just in about 100 locations but by Monday, we are pushing it into private hospitals; into all primary health centres; and all public hospitals so that everybody can have access to have their jab.

“The complaint before was that we did not have the vaccine. Now, we have gotten the vaccine; we need people to come out to get their jabs and I can assure you that it is safe; it is 99.9 percent safe. We don’t know how the fourth wave will turn out, and so I am appealing to those who are yet to have their jabs to do so,” he said.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference, COWLSO called on government through the Ministry of Health and various stakeholders to institute policies mandating screening for cancer, and HPV vaccination for the girl-child from age 10.

“As a people, we should raise awareness and engage in advocacy to encourage screening so that the three preventable types of cancer – Breast and Cervical (for women) and Prostate (For Men) would actually remain prevented.

“The government, through the Ministry of Health and various stakeholders, should also institute policies mandating screening for these checks and HPV Vaccination for the girl-child from age 10.”

They also recommended that: “As women, we should maintain a healthy record keeping, savings and financial planning culture, in readiness for financing opportunities that could surface.

“The government, in support of women, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Policy Alleviation at the State and Federal Levels should organize seminars from time to time to educate women on how to keep basic financial records in an effective way, so as to access funds and position them for global opportunities.

“That women should maintain and demonstrate a constant state of readiness by taking advantage of available education, advocacy and community engagement as it relates to COVID-19. The government in turn should ensure deliberate and continuous investment in healthcare delivery, leveraging on technology for further reach.

“That as women, we should rebrand and care for ourselves, possessing strength, perseverance and humility as qualities. We should support and encourage aspiration and leadership.”

In his closing remarks, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki who was represented by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, said Lagos remained a pace setter in courses of development in the country.

“Where – ever Lagos goes, eventually Nigeria goes. This State has exported so much to so many other places. There are people who have lived in Lagos and have taken the adventures back home in order to develop it. We want to ask you to continue,” he said.

According to him, the lessons learnt from the Conference have been noted and the same would be introduced and implemented in his home State.

Quoting the saying that when you “train a woman, you train a nation”, Obaseki who closed the Conference, applauded the philanthropic disposition of the Committee towards development courses, charging them “not to become weary.”

On her part, Lagos State First Lady and COWLSO Chairman, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, said the conference theme – “Awake,” was designed to bring women in tune with modern realities and opportunities.

She further emphasized on the need for equal opportunities for women, stressing it was paramount to give them a right of place in leadership position.

According to her, the “positive impacts of the mind shifting training” held during the conference “would be felt across all strata of the society.
