LASTMA General Manager Reacts to Misleading Media Report

The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olajide Oduyoye has reacted to a television news story in which a man, named Godspower Osaze Ohamen, claimed that the brainbox of his Toyota Corolla Saloon car got missing within LASTMA premises after his arrest on Thursday, 20th August 2020.

Oduyoye explained that Ohamen failed to produce his Driver’s Licence for identification until he appeared on the television programme to reveal his identity, adding that in the process of arrest, the driver sprinkled a liquid substance on LASTMA men and recited incantations at the officials of the Agency.

He maintained that in a bid to verify the driver’s identity for issuance of a document charging him to Court, the LASTMA officials insisted that Osaze must produce his licence but he declined and opted to release his car keys before leaving the premises.

The General Manager stated that “the vehicle had to be towed into the premises of LASTMA because of Mr. Ohamen’s conduct before the arrest. After the vehicle was lowered from the tow truck, a joint inspection was carried out with our men before he locked his vehicle and delivered the keys in the presence of officers. All these procedures were captured on video by officials of the Agency”.

Speaking further, Oduyoye revealed that the accused showed up at LASTMA on Tuesday, 25th August, 2020, but officers insisted that his driver’s licence must be produced as earlier requested.

“The young man was again asked when he showed at LASTMA five days later to produce his driver’s licence; he simply stepped out and returned some minutes later to raise an alarm that his vehicle’s brainbox had been removed. It is surprising how he gained access into a vehicle that was locked and its keys were with the Agency”, Oduyoye said.

Disclosing that the incident has been reported to the Police, Oduyoye gave an assurance that the result of investigations into the matter will be made available to the public and affirmed that LASTMA will not be deterred from carrying out its mandate despite threats, intimidation or blackmail from some unruly members of the public.

The General Manager urged motorists to report any complaints about the Agency’s personnel through telephone numbers – 08129928503, 08129928490 or 08129928469 and advised members of the public to always obey the traffic laws of Lagos State to avoid the consequences of unruly conduct and possible prosecution.

Suspected Terrorists in Oke-Ogun: No Cause For Alarm-Defence Hqtrs

The Nigerian Army has responded to the statement recently made by the leader of Are-Ona-Kankanfo-In-Council, Are Gani Adams that some ISIS terrorists have infiltrated Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State.

The Defence Headquarters through its Spokesman, Major Gen. john Eneche has allayed the fear the statement credited to Are Onakankanfo might have caused to the people of Oke-Ogun and Oyo State at large by assuring the entire people of Southwest of adequate security in view of the alleged claim that suspected ISIS operatives and terrorists have infiltrated SouthWest States.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, said this while addressing newsmen at a media briefing on military operations across the country on Thursday in Abuja.

Enenche, who said people should not be panic about the alarm as there was nothing to fear about, added that the security agencies will not leave no stone unturned until the evolving security challenge is addressed and tackled headlong.

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, was said to have disclosed, in a communique issued after an extraordinary meeting of the Aare Ona Kakanfo-in-Council that suspected ISIS operatives and terrorists were now in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State.

“More worrisome, the intelligence report also reveals that suspected ISIS operatives have positioned themselves in Niger State via Ibaruba land and are now within the Oke-Ogun corridor of Oyo State.

“Indeed, the Intel also revealed that about 500 power bikes and assorted ammunition belonging to the terrorists have been sighted along the abandoned Lusada route moving towards Sokoto, from Igbo-Ora in Oyo State,”he claimed.

Enenche, however said that the claim was nothing, but just an alarm and that Nigeria security agencies were equal to the task, and would not handle it with a kid’s glove.

The coordinator, who said that the security agencies were on top of the situation, also reiterated the determination of the military to put all measures in place to be ahead of the challenge.

Akeredolu to Security: Call Jegede’s Supporters To Order

Akeredolu has called on Nigerian Police Force to call Jegede to order. This was contained in a statement personally signed by Olabode Richard Olatunde
Spokesperson, Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation.

“We have observed with dismay, an ugly trend ahead of the October 10, 2020 governorship election and wish to alert the good people of Ondo state and relevant security agencies.

Members of the APC and supporters of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, have been subjected to unprovoked attacks from hoodlums loyal to the governorship candidate of the PDP, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN.

Innocent members of the APC who were going about their personal routine were rounded up at Odopetu in Akure by PDP thugs who inflicted bodily harm on them and removed their branded caps and T-shirts bearing the name of Governor Akeredolu and APC logo.

It is gathered that the Eyitayo Jedege thugs have been harrasssing and attacking anyone wearing branded caps and T-shirt bearing the APC logo and Governor Akeredolu‘s name.

We see these mindless and unprovoked attacks as a direct affront on the peaceful resolve of the APC and its candidate, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN.

While no one has a monopoly of violence, Governor Akeredolu is a known man of peace whose respect and value for the lives of the good people of the state is unshaken.

We , therefore, warn the PDP not to take the political maturity of the APC and its candidate, Governor Akeredolu for granted or be misconstrued as a sign of weakness.

We are calling on the security agents to call the PDP to order as the people of the state will no longer tolerate any act of intimidation and harassment from the drowning PDP.

While we are not known for violence, we shall continue to guide our members and supporters to eschew violence and allow the electoral process to fruition. Our confidence to return to office remains unwavering”.

Afenifere rejects FG’s decision to collapse Amotekun into community policing

Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has rejected plans by the Nigerian Government to use the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to determine and control the structure of Amotekun and other security outfits in states.

National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, disclosed this while speaking with PRESS on Wednesday in reaction to a statement credited to Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Odumakin said the plan by the IGP to determine and control the structure of Amotekun and other security outfits in Southwest States was an attempt aimed at muzzling and whittling down the operations of such outfits using command and control gimmick.

Odumakin said it was an indication that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was not interested in the security of lives and properties of Nigerian citizens.

He said that the South-West region would resist any attempt to truncate or thwart the operations of Amotekun, which is backed by law passed by the six state parliaments.

He said, “They are not interested in the security of Nigerians. What they are interested in is command and control and to be in charge. The moment you submit Amotekun to the control of IGP, that is the end of it. We will reject such a move.”

Commander of Ondo State Security Network Agencies, Adetunji Adeleye, said the Amotekun Corps cannot be subsumed under the guise of community policing by the Nigerian Government.

Adeleye said Amotekun was a grassroots security outfit that already had its own legal backing.

He said the security outfit was established to compliment efforts of existing security agencies in the South-West region to curtail crime.

Adeleye said, “The Amotekun Corps is a baby of the law set up for policing and protection of its own people.

“You cannot subject the structure of the Amotekun Corps to the directive from the Inspector-General of Police or any other legal entity.

“All Amotekun does is to complement all existing security agencies in the country including the police.

“The constitution guarantees the state to also have its own security outfit so far they are backed up by laws guiding their operations. There is a law put in place which has even been passed by state Houses of Assemblies guiding the operations of the Amotekun Corps.”

While noting that the state was not against the government to create community policing, Adeleye said they have already fashioned out a way to protect people of the region.

On his own part, spokesperson for the United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy, Tony Uranta, said Garba Shehu had a right to his views but cannot decide for people on how they would secure their lives and property in the face of the challenges of insecurity confronting the nation.

He called on the governors in South-South and South-East to team up in solidarity and support the South-West governors to ensure that Amotekun was not hijacked by the Federal Nigerian Government.

Lagos Engages Recruitment Experts on Internship, Job Placement

A call has gone out to private organisations to partner with the Lagos State Government in its drive to bridge the unemployment rates in the State and also increase the chances of gainful job opportunities for job seekers.

The Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke made the call on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Ikeja with recruitment experts on ways to partner with the government to ensure that unemployed youths are gainfully employed in the State.

The Commissioner noted that the meeting was organised at the behest of the Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, as one of the strategists being used by the government to solve the rate of unemployment in the State, leveraging on the expertise of recruitment agencies to achieve the collective goal of job creation and work placement as they know where the job opportunities are.

According to her, “We are looking at ways outside what the government can do to solve the unemployment issue, therefore, we need to talk to partners, to experts in the recruitment field on ways to collaborate to solve the unemployment surge and find how we can put graduates in the employment bracket”.

Arobieke explained that despite the high rate of unemployment in the country, there are still vacant positions yet to be filled due to the perception that most graduates are unemployable, adding that this could be linked to job seekers’ lack of employability skills, the mismatch between demand for labour and the ability of applicants and outdated school curricula which lack entrepreneurship and employability skills.

Maintaining that the meeting was to complement the goals of the five job registration/labour exchange centres in each division of the State, Mrs. Arobieke said it the interactive session also aimed at enhancing the graduate internship programme, employability skills training and mentorship programme organised by the State Government.

She expressed the hope that deliberation would continue to engender a professional network between the Ministry and recruitment experts until the margin between the employed and unemployed is drastically bridged.

While highlighting the efforts by the present administration towards addressing the plight of the unemployed in Lagos, the Commissioner commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his commitment and support in ensuring that unemployed youths are gainfully engaged for sustainable livelihood, which was underscored by the recent approval of 2,000 job seekers for internship programmes at corporate organisations where the government will be paying their allowances for six months.

The stakeholders’ meeting with the theme “Partnering for Success, Adapting Internship and Job Placement Practices for Post COVID-19 Reality” later went into plenary sessions moderated by Mrs. Titi Akisanya, a leading recruitment consultant/expert.

On the Farmers/herders clashes, the State Police boss who promised that his men will take proactive steps to arrest those causing the crises, blamed the spate of kidnappings, armed robbery and other heinous crimes perpetrated in some parts of the state on some Nomads who use their cattle as cover-ups.

The governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu has reacted to a statement credited to the Spokesman of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Garba Sheu where he was quoted to have said that FG would not allow Amotekun to operate in isolation from the existing internal security guidelines and structures of the Federal Government as part of powers vested on the Inspector General of Police.

Akeredolu while speaking to the PRESS today, said FG cannot dictate to the people of South West on how they would maintain their internal security affairs particularly when conventional policing has failed.
