Akeredolu mismanages COVID-19 fund, fails to give account of spendings – PDP

The PDP National Campaign Council for Ondo Governorship Election has described the excuse by embattled Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu that he submitted the account of the spending of COVID-19 response funds to an Abuja based Non-Governmental Organization as self-indicting.

The PDP berates the Ondo state governor for seeking to drag in an NGO as a cover to evade answering to queries put to him by the Ondo people who demand a detailed public account of the COVID-19 intervention funds following allegations of diversions by officials of his self-serving administration and urge Akeredolu to account to the people.

This was contained in a statement signed and released to the newsmen today by
Chairman, Publicity Sub-Committee, Kola Ologbodiyan.

PDP said It is sickening that Governor Akeredolu seeks to confuse the citizens of Ondo state by referring to a bank account he claimed to have sent to an NGO, which provides no proofs of actual item purchases as well as actual delivery of materials and services for payments.

“We invite Nigerians and the Ondo people to note that Governor Akeredolu’s self-serving administration has failed to account to the people on the management of the fund, having failed to show the term of expenditures, approving details; quantity and quality of products and services paid for; as well as confirmation of actual delivery for payments made”, said Ologbodiyan.

“The response by Governor Akeredolu has only muddled up statutory financial accounting system by referring the people of Ondo to an NGO in Abuja.

“Our campaign therefore invites the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately commence investigation into the handling of the Ondo COVID-19 funds now that Governor Akeredolu has failed to give proper account as demanded by the Ondo people”.

Sanwo-Olu donates over 51 vehicles, eight houses to Lagos judges

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu while handing over the houses and cars at the Ikeja High Court on Wednesday, pledged that no arm of Government in the state will be deprived of requisite tools to perform its statutory duties.

It would be second time in a year Gov Sanwo-Olu would be giving out official vehicles to members of the State’s judiciary.

Last October, the Governor gave out 50 official cars to magistrates to aid their duties.

According to him, there would be no good governance and development without a formidable judiciary and he re-assured members of the judicial arm that the executive arm under his leadership would be a dependable partner.

“In handing over these 51 vehicles to our judges and eight houses to the newly appointed judges of the state High Court, we are ensuring that our judiciary has all it takes to seamlessly perform its duties as the bastion of the common man. We cherish the work you do; we thank you for justifying the confidence reposed in you; we appreciate you for being independent umpires even when the stakes are high,” he said.

“The judiciary is the bedrock of our society, and our judges need all the support they can get to effectively perform their duties. In line with this, we have devised a thorough process to overhaul our judiciary in such a way that justice is dispensed without fear or favour.

“There will be no dividends of democracy for the people if there is no active, independent, impartial and incorruptible judiciary. We will continue to provide the necessary training and infrastructure required to ensure that the integrity of the judiciary is not eroded.”

The governor, who toured the Ikeja and Igbosere High Courts last Saturday for facility inspection, disclosed that he had already approved a complete renovation on decrepit courtrooms in the two courts. He said his Government would not evade its responsibility to create conducive ambience for the judicial staff to engage their duties.

Sanwo-Olu also urged the judicial officers to reciprocate the support being extended towards them by deepening the rule of law and accelerating justice administration without compromising its independence.

The Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, described the event as “double grace” for members of the judicial arm in the State, noting that the magnanimity of the Sanwo-Olu-led executive was unprecedented in the annals of Lagos’ judiciary.

“The kind of support which the judiciary has received from the Government of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is unprecedented and today’s event is historic because it is a double grace for our members. It is the first time a Governor will be giving out vehicles to judges and accompanying the gesture with gift of houses.

LASTMA pledges to address unruly conduct of officers in Lagos

The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olajide Oduyoye, has assured the public that due diligence will be observed in the case of a female officer seen displaying professional misconduct at Aromire Junction, Ikeja on Friday, September 11, 2020, in a viral online video.

In a release by the Agency, Oduyoye disclosed that the officers in the video – Mrs. Adepeju Odunlami and her male counterpart – have been invited for investigation, just as he gave an assurance that appropriate disciplinary action will be meted out on the erring personnel as laid down in the Lagos State Civil Service rules.

According to the General Manager, a statement written by Mrs. Odunlami claimed that the driver of the black Honda vehicle, with registration number SF 885 KJA, ran the red light at Aromire junction and drove without a seat belt.

Giving a further update about the incident, Oduyoye said the lady wrote that the vehicle returned through the route on the same day but the driver and front-seat passenger still did not strap their seat belts.

“She, therefore, decided to apprehend the recalcitrant driver for the traffic infraction. This led to an altercation with the passenger biting her finger and the driver punching her head resulting in lacerations which she also said got her enraged”, the General Manager explained.

While noting that the driver of the vehicle actually committed a traffic infraction, Oduyoye said the LASTMA official should have simply documented the details of the vehicle for action by the Zonal Authority instead of allowing the issue to degenerate to the level of assault.

“The LASTMA official demonstrated poor professional judgement as a public servant, whose conduct is the focus of the public, thereby misrepresenting and casting smear on the State Government and the Agency”, Oduyoye submitted.

He reiterated that LASTMA continuously trains its staff to discharge their duties professionally and will continue to do so, urging members of the public to report all misdemeanour by any officer on Lagos roads, so that appropriate steps can be taken for a more efficient and effective service by personnel of the Agency.

As part of efforts aimed at saving lives during associated ailments which often result in cardiac arrest, the Lagos State Health Service Commission has commenced the training on Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques for 500 personnel selected across public hospitals and cadres.

Speaking at the commencement of the training programme held at the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Benjamin Eniayewun, observed the need for first responders to get acquainted with Basic Life Support procedure, as part of moves to curb the sudden death of patients experiencing cardiac arrest.

According to him, “Cardiac arrest is a sudden unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness, often resulting from an electrical disturbance of the heart; if not immediately and medically attended, could result in death”.

“There is ample need for extensive knowledge on BLS techniques, through constant appraisal, such that it could be deployed as often as possibly required in order to avoid the death of victims if resuscitation procedures were duly administered by a competent health worker or individual”, he added.

Dr. Eniayewun reiterated that some associated illness in society can induce cardiac arrest in any individual and can eventually lead to deteriorating condition, unless there is someone in the immediate environment with comprehensive knowledge of BLS technique to salvage the situation.

While emphasising its relevance at enhancing medical aid amongst healthcare workers, the Permanent Secretary stated that the Basic Life Support process helps to save lives, stressing that all healthcare providers should inculcate the knowledge, irrespective of position or cadre, as a form of first aid treatment to preserve the victim’s life until help arrives.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Director in the Directorate of Medical Services and Coordinator of the training, Dr. Shola Pitan, said the initiative was part of moves at improving the capacity of the trainees towards enhancing healthcare standards for all patients and residents of Lagos State.

In his words: “There is a need to improve the capacity of healthcare providers in order to improve the growing medical demands of the ailing public. The participants at the programme, schemed under the American Heart Certified (AHA) standard, will be awarded Certificates of Practice valid for a two-year period”.
