Mr Joseph Aloba, the father of late Nigerian artist Mohbad, has explained why he insisted on a paternity test for his grandson, Liam Light.
He disclosed in a recent interview that Mohbad did not name Liam, but rather his wife, Wunmi Aloba.
According to the clergyman and musician, he planned to call his grandson Victor, but Wunmi gave him Liam, which raised his suspicions about the 1-year-old boy’s birth.
Since Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, and was first buried in Ikorodu, Lagos State, his family has been embroiled in an ongoing dispute over his assets and is undergoing a DNA test on Liam.
According to reports, Mr. Aloba is delaying the singer’s reburial until a paternity test is conducted. It’s important mentioning that the Lagos State Court has ordered Wunmi to do a DNA test on Liam.
In a recent interview, he revealed that he suspected Mohbad’s son’s birth since his name is Liam, which is Muslim rather than Christian.
In his words, “My son did not give him Liam. I wanted to give him Victor, they said no, they gave him Liam. And it’s Muslim that bear Liam not Christian. That was when I suspected that the boy’s Placenta that they did not give me during his birth was given to the real father of the child”.Social media users flooded comment section with their thoughts.
The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes has announced its decision to honour and decorate the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice I. S Yerima with the title Distinguished Fellow Award -DFA.
The announcement was made during the visitation of the 2024 Ibadan Cultural Festival Week Central Committee led by the Chairman, Balogun Gaphar Babatunde Ojetola to the office of the State Chief Judge.
The CCII delegation were received by the Honourable Chief Judge, alongside Hon. Justice Olagunju, Hon. Justice (Mrs) Sule, Alhaja Oyediran, Chief Registrar, Mr Abiodun Adebisi; Assistant Chief Registrar & Mrs Olomide; Assistant Chief Registrar.
According to the Chairman of 2024 Ibadan Cultural Festival Week, Balogun Gaphar Ojetola, the visitation was under the instruction of Chief Barr. Niyi Ajewole, the President -General of Central Council of Ibadan, and part of the pre-activities of this year’s Ibadan Cultural Festival celebration is to visit high personalities in the State and ensuring that no-one is left.
The Chairman outlined the various activities lined up for the week-long program of this year’s Ibadan Cultural Festival of which the Grand Finale is expected immediately after the new Olubadan coronation.
Part of the activities mapped out were Education Competitions from Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Higher Institutions, Sports competition between the eleven local governments of Ibadanland, Talent- Hunts, Ibadan Conference , Free Shopping, Ibadan Youths Day, Amala/ Indigenous Music Fiesta, Ibadan Conference and Ibadan Street Parade, Business Luncheon and winding the week down with the Grand Finale where series of well deserved awards will be bestowed on merit winners.
According to the Chairman, the grand finale will take place on a Saturday in May which will mark the end of the Cultural Festival and will hold at the Liberty Stadium where the Chief Judge and other distinguished personalities, including Ibadan sons and daughters and non-Ibadan will receive their various awards.
Among those penned down to be honoured includes Her Excellency, the Wife of the State Governor, Engr. Mrs Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde (Most Outstanding Wife of Ibadanland), His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal (Most Outstanding Friend of Ibadanland. MOFI) among other important personalities.
In addition, Balogun Gaphar Ojetola acknowledged the support the State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde has been giving Ibadan land, and by extension the CCII and Ibadan Cultural Festival.
The Hon. Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima paid glowing tributes to the leadership of the CCII for bestowing the award on her personality and pledged her total support for the success of the Cultural Festival. She prayed that Ibadanland will continue to record more success, progress and development. The Chief Justice commended the State Governor on his unflinching support towards the newly completed Olubadan Palace, first of its kind in the South West of Nigeria. Twenty nine suspects have been arraigned before an Ibadan Chief Magistrate Court for their alleged involvement and roles in the invasion of Oyo state secretariat at the weekend with intention to hijack government.
The suspects comprising male, female, young and old were arraigned on a seven count charge bothering on treasonable felony, going armed in conducts likely to cause breach of public peace and order, illegal possession of firearms amongst others.
Their offences, according to the Investigative Police Officer, Bakare Rasaq, an Inspector with the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan are contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
Presiding over the case, the Chief Magistrate OO Ogunkanmi adjourned the case to the 1st of August 2024 for hearing and ordered that the suspects be remanded at the state correctional centre, Agodi.
Today, Tuesday 16th April, 2024, Ibadan Indigenes, under the leadership of Chief (Barr.) Sulaiman Ajeniyi Ajewole, President -General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes paid a visit to celebrate Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo on his 89th birth anniversary at his Molete residence.
According to Balogun Gaphar Babatunde Ojetola, the 2024 Ibadan Cultural Festival Planning Committee Chairman who led the delegation, he described Pa. Engineer Dr .Victor Omololu Olunloyo as a reservoir of knowledge, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the fabric of Ibadanland, Nigeria and the world at large, earning a PHD at age 25 years, among others.
“Dr. Omololu Olunloyo is notably one of Africa’s most brilliant scholars, a forthright and highly cerebral Mathematician and a walking encyclopaedia whose uncommon vast historical knowledge on Ibadan, Yoruba, Africa and the whole world is second to none”
Part of the anniversary letter reads “As a public administrator per excellence, as an engineer by training and a world standard Mathematical Authority, it will also be noted of your impressive private studies and authority in Law. You are indeed a moving encyclopedia and a man of many parts.

Dr. Olunloyo’s journey of service and excellence spans decades, marked by outstanding achievements in various spheres. As a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and later as the governor of the Old Oyo State, his leadership was characterized by vision, integrity, and a deep commitment to the welfare of the people.
During his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Olunloyo played a pivotal role in the development and governance of local communities, most especially seeing to the successful crowning of two prominent kings in Oyo State, the late Alaafin of Oyo & late Soun of Ogbomoso.

Former Kaduna State governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai recently stated that the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu is currently subsidizing fuel for Nigerians. El-Rufai expressed this view during an interaction with journalists in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday, noting that the FG is now spending more on fuel subsidy than before.
The President had announced the removal of fuel subsidies during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, mentioning that the country could no longer afford to provide this benefit to its citizens. However, this decision led to a surge in fuel prices and a subsequent increase in the cost of other goods and services, exacerbating the economic challenges facing the nation since 2023.
Contrary to the earlier removal of the subsidy, El-Rufai revealed that the government had reinstated the fuel subsidy. He explained that the return of the subsidy was prompted by the realization that the measures introduced to mitigate its impact had not been effective in alleviating the economic burden, leading to the reimplementation of fuel subsidy by the federal government.
El-Rufai highlighted that many individuals might not be aware of the reinstated fuel subsidy. He suggested comparing petrol and diesel prices as evidence, noting that while diesel is priced above one thousand naira per litre, petrol remains at N600 per litre.
This price discrepancy indicates that the government is still subsidizing petrol, as per El-Rufai’s observations, aimed at addressing the shortcomings in the initial implementation of the fuel subsidy.
The students of Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law, University of Ibadan organized symposium on energy crisis in Nigeria.
The symposium which was held on the 11th of April, 2024 started with first lecture which was delivered by Barr. Olawale Aro, General Manager, Legal and Regulatory Compliance, North-South Power Company Ltd, Nigeria, on the topic: Incessant Power Outages in Nigeria: Economic Implications and WayForward. Barr. Olawale Aro began the lecture by giving a run-down of the value chain in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) market structure, and pointed out that, part of the problem facing the power sector, is the way and manner the value chain was actually arranged between the Generation Companies (GenCos), the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trader (NBET), Transmission Company (TCN) and Distribution Companies (DisCos). He emphasized that the revenue collected by the DisCos from customers within 30-day circle does not belong solely to the DisCos, but to the market which comprises TCN in its contribution of pushing out the product in the value chain, NBET, NERC, settlement of outstanding loans pumped into the value chain and the overall operations of the players; the monies being shared upwardly.
According to him, what the DisCos get at the end of the day is operational expenses. The problem begins, he said, where the DisCos cannot collect or retrieve from customers, the expected returns by the market (value chain), resulting in debts accrual and loss of value. He stated that currently, the market is being owed N1.6 Trillion in collections that the DisCos has not been able to collect. Giving further reasons why Nigerians continue to experience incessant power outages, Barr. Aro enumerated the reasons to include lack of gas supply, poor transmission and distribution infrastructures, distribution losses (Aggregated Technical & Commercial losses AT&C), liquidity issues and issues of capacity vs. demand. On economic implications, the learned practitioner listed same as reduced productivity, impact on SMEs, increased cost of business and impediment to investment. However, as regard wayforward, Barr. Aro emphasized on infrastructural investments; maintenance, upgrade and expansion of the grid; total overhaul of existing infrastructure for both transmission & distribution, encouraging alternative sources in renewable energies, policy & regulatory reforms, encouraging decentralization of Power generation and distribution to enhance efficiency, and capacity building (human capital development).
The second lecture titled “From Fossil Fuels to Renewable Energy: The Benefits and Opportunities for Nigeria”, was delivered by Mr. Tunde Gbajumo, Chief of Party, USAID Nigeria Power Sector Programme. He began by stressing the point that resolving the issue of POWER conundrum in Nigeria should not be left only for engineers but should involve lawyers, economists and engineers alike, which is in line with what CPEEL is doing. He expressed his experience over the years with REA established to roll out a programme called the Nigeria Electrification Project which has three pillars: promoting mini-grids in Nigeria, with over ten thousand communities in Nigeria that earmarked to benefit from same; deployment of solar home system and the Energize Education Programme where government with other agencies are working to provide electricity in Universities and hospitals. He emphasized that the idea is to switch from fossil noisy diesel generators to cleaner solutions. He stated that BUK Kano, was the first University where the project was launched with a capacity of providing 7 MW to power the University. He reiterated that at present, over 50% of Nigerians have no access to energy and also that inspite of what is put in place to phase out fossil fuels, fossil fuels will still be part of our energy mix in 2030. “What we are seeing now is a phase down, rather than a phase out”, he said. He pointed out that phase out may be possible between 2060 or thereabouts. On issue of emissions through gas flaring, Mr, Gbajumo spoke on government’s plan through the gas flare commercialization programme, for the purpose of commercializing the gas instead of flaring it, to reduce carbon emissions, in order to cushion the effects of climate change which has been blamed for various ills like herdsmen and farmer clashes, floods etc and stressed on the importance and benefits of renewables which, according to him, still face issues like financing, commercial, operational and enabling environment.
A discussant, Engr. Christopher Lawal, Head, Network Operations of Ibadan Electricity Distribution company (IBEDC), also contributed to the symposium, in his words, he identified lack of gas supply to GenCos as a major fall back of the reasons for incessant power outages in Nigeria. Further, he stated that the capacity of the Transmission company due to dilapidation of transmission facilities is another factor and called for upgrade of TCN facilities. He also identified massive load sharing due to increase in power demand, inadequate prompt response to breakdown of transmission lines and transformers, dilapidated network especially in DisCos, as factors responsible for incessant power outages. He therefore called for overhaul of the distribution lines and partnership with embedded power generation companies by DisCos as solutions to ease the issues of power outages in Nigeria.
The special guest of honour, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, President, Nigerian Economic Society (NES), while commenting, thanked the President and Excos of CPEELSA for organizing the programme and stated that the power sector needed a fundamental restructuring where the design of the privatization plans had to be revisited, and all stakeholders including the government, private sectors, and regulators can come together and take a second look at the privatization programme to detect where failures emanated from in the industry in order to nip it at the bud.
Also contributing to the Symposium, Prof. Fisoye Delano, President, Delphi Ventura Group, Texas USA, as a special guest of honour also talked about increasing and improving gas supply and infrastructures for the GenCos and also called on stability of gas supply as a means of improving power generation and supply.
There were Questions and Answers section and the programme was eventually brought to an end with a vote of thanks from the President of Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law Students’ Association (CPEELSA), Mr. Ismael Taiwo.
At least 19 people tragically lost their lives in a devastating auto crash on the Oyo-Ogbomoso Road on Sunday. The collision occurred when a driver recklessly drove against traffic, resulting in a catastrophic head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace Bus (registered as NTT52ZY) and a Toyota Corolla sedan.
In a statement by Jonas Agwu, the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, it was reported that out of the 20 individuals involved in the accident, 19 died.
In response to this tragic event, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, has instructed Sector Commanders to intensify patrol operations to address the issue of route violations on the nation’s highways, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“In light of the tragic fatal crash that resulted in the loss of 19 lives on Sunday, April 14, 2024, along the Oyo-Ogbomoso route at 07:45 AM, stemming from a flagrant route violation commonly known as ‘One Way’, which led to a devastating head-on collision and subsequent fire outbreak, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, has issued directives for sector commanders to enhance patrol efforts to address the scourge of route violations on the nation’s highways.”
“The crash investigation report submitted to the Corps Marshal sheds light on the incident, disclosing the involvement of two vehicles: a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration NTT52ZY, departing from Ibadan en route to Sokoto, and a Toyota Corolla sedan.
The report further elucidates that the collision, precipitated by a violation of traffic regulations, encompassed a total of 20 people, all adult males. Tragically, 19 persons lost their lives in the crash, while the lone survivor was rescued by FRSC operatives with injuries.”
“The FRSC rescue team, tasked with the lifesaving efforts, promptly transported the injured survivor to Opabode Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Meanwhile, the deceased victims have been transferred to the morgue at Oyo General Hospital.
In light of this tragic event, the Corps Marshal urges all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further road traffic accidents.”
A leader of Yoruba Self Determination group, Professor Banji Akintoye and Yoruba nNation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho have distanced themselves from a group of agitators that invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan on Saturday.
The duo said they were not aware or in support of the agitators and their actions.
Akintoye said those involved were not fighting for Yoruba interests but against the Yorubas in their conducts.
He said available information indicated the group appointed an interim government for the Yoruba Nation and decided to take over the region from the Oyo State secretariat, which informed the deployment of men in military camouflage.
Prof Akintoye said: “I am not connected, I have no contact and I do not know anything about Onitiri and her group. I don’t know what they are doing.
” I learnt they are engaged in some sort of insanity in Ibadan but that is entirely they, and it has noting to do with me or people like Chief Sunday Igboho who are working with me.
“We are the authentic Yoruba Nation Movement. We are not connected. We are the people fighting for Youna Nation freedom and we will win the war peacefully and in an orderly manner.
“They are not struggling for the Yoruba Nation, they are struggling against the Yoruba Nation. I am not aware of the situation that happened in Ibadan until I was informed by Chief Sunday Igboho this morning. I am not part of it. They are not from us. They are followers of Onitiri. It is a lunatic fringe. We in this struggle won’t act in such a manner.”
Sunday Igboho said he will never be involved in such madness noting that anytime he wants to engage in any struggle, he will always make it public and carry other stakeholders along.
He said “I know nothing about it. I am not even aware of those behind it. If I am going to do anything, either for early or any struggle for Yoruba Nation, you know we will inform people ahead.
“We will announce our plans and all our leaders and other stakeholders will also be involved and we will collaborate to do so.
“So, anything they now do on their own, either they attack the government or military barrack or Police station, I know nothing about it and I am not part of it.”

Ascending to greater heights, both metaphorically and literally, the tour then led to the iconic Bower’s Tower, perched at Igbo Agala at Oke Aremo. From this vantage point, students beheld the panoramic vista of Ibadan, as the city sprawled below, a testament to its grandeur and resilience.
Amidst the exploration and cultural immersion, moments of leisure and recreation were cherished. At the Royal Boat Cruise in Eleyele, members indulged in relaxation, gaming sessions, and a captivating boat cruise along the tranquil waters. Against the backdrop of Ibadan’s scenic beauty, friendships were forged, and memories etched forever.
Indeed, the tour orchestrated by the FIBSU-UNIOSUN 2023/2024 executives and coordinators, under the astute leadership of Aare Adepoju Afeez Babatunde, transcended mere sightseeing. It was a journey of discovery, unity, and appreciation, weaving together the threads of tradition, history, and camaraderie. As the echoes of laughter and camaraderie lingered, participants departed with hearts full of gratitude, and minds enriched by the vibrant tapestry of Ibadan’s cultural heritage.
