A 38-year-old married hunter, Joseph Ajegba, has narrated the event that led to his bossom friend’s demise in lkun-Akoko, in Akoko South West council area of Ondo state.
The suspect was paraded at the state police headquarters, Akure, on Wednesday, September 4.
He said he committed the crime after he caught the deceased ‘working out’ with his girlfriend in the house he rented for her.
He said that he had dropped a bush meat for his girlfriend earlier in the day and went out in the night for another round of game but was surprised by what he saw when he got to the house.
According to him, “I went out hunting after I have taken some bottles of beer, but I ran out of cartridges. I wanted to return to the house of my girlfriend to sleep there.
When I got there, I saw the door locked. I now went to the window and I opened it and saw a co-hunter ‘working out’ with my girlfriend. That was why I used the gun in my hand.”
The Nigerian Labour Congress has said that they have been betrayed by Tinubu-led administration over the recent increase in petroleum pump price.
This was contained in a statement made available by NLC State Secretariat as read in part:
“We filled with a deep sense of betrayal as the federal government clandestinely increases the pump price of pms. One of the reasons for accepting N70,000 as national minimum wage was the understanding that the pump price of pms would not be increased even as we knew that N70,000 was not sufficient.
“We recall vividly when Mr President gave us the devil’s alternatives to choose from: either N250,000 as minimum wage (subject to the rise of the pump price between N1,500 and N2,000) and N70,000 (at old pms rates), we opted for the latter because we could not bring ourselves to accept further punishment on Nigerians.
“But here we are, barely one month after and with government yet to commence payment of the new national minimum wage, confronted by a reality we cannot explain.
It is both traumatic and nightmarish.
“Yet, when we told government that its approach to resolving the fuel subsidy contradictions was patently faulty and would not last, its front row cheer leaders sneered at us, saying we did not understand basic economics .
“But if truth be told, this act of betrayal is consistent with the character of this government. We recall the assurances we were given by the leadership of the National Assembly on the 250% tariff hike, that it had been dealt with and there was no need to openly engage the Minister of Power who was at that meeting.
Instead of the promised reversal, the rate has since been jerked up further putting more Nigerians and businesses in jeopardy.
The combined effects of government’s ferocious right -wing market policies brought Nigerians and Nigeria to their all-time low and led to the End-Hunger/End Bad Governance protests.
Rather than make amends, government arrested and hounded into detention some of those who took part and some of those who had nothing to do with these protests, charging them with criminal conspiracy, subversion, treasonable felony, terrorism financing and cyber crime with an intent to overthrow the government of President Tinubu.
The police and other security agencies have since been on rampage terrorising the citizenry in pursuance of government’s agenda of muzzling lawful dissent.
In brazen pursuit, they have defamed and libelled not a few individuals.
They have gone as far as appropriating the statutory roles of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in resolving trade dispute matters and issues considered outside the jurisdiction of the security agencies.
That the government is on rampage in the face of stifling conditions of living is an understatement but we promise Nigerians that we at the Nigeria Labour Congress will not be cowed into submission. Together with civil society, we brought about this democracy when some of the actors in power today were conspiring with the military on how to perpetuate their hold on political power.
When the State and the security forces picked on us in a hybrid war, we had our suspicions. We knew they were up to something sinister and needed to distract/divert our attention or possibly frighten or weaken us before they came out with it so that we would not have a robust response.
Now that the chickens have come to roost, we were right in our suspicions. However, we want to let Nigerians know that the clandestine/surreptitious increase in the pump price of pms is the first among the equally sinister policies government has up its sleeve.
On our part, we stand resolute with the people and will neither be distracted nor intimidated by the government or its security agencies.
We insist that government cannot criminalise protests or basic rights in the domain of the citizenry.
Accordingly, we demand the immediate: 1). Reversal of the latest increase in the pump of pms across the country;
2). Release of all those incarcerated or being prosecuted on the assumption of having participated in the recent protests;
3). Halt the indiscriminate arrest and detention of citizens on trumped up charges;
4). Reversal of the 250% tariff hike in electricity;
5). Stop to the hijack of the duties of the Ministry of Labour and Employment;
6). End to policies that engender hunger and insecurity;
7). Halt to government’s culture of terror, fear and lying.
We are guided by our belief in our country and the need to secure and sustain its sovereignty, integrity and welfare of the people.
In the coming days, the appropriate organs of the Congress will be meeting to take appropriate decisions which will be made public”.

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority has sealed off two Chinese companies, Yibao Industrial Limited and Ronchang Industrial Park, for violating environmental laws by failing to properly manage their waste. Yibao Industrial Limited is located at Bara Village along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway, while Ronchang Industrial Park is situated opposite Julius Berger yard on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to a statement from the authority on Sunday, the companies repeatedly ignored warnings and failed to engage accredited waste collectors to manage their waste, leading to improper disposal practices. The Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, Abayomi Hunye, led an enforcement team to shut down the companies’ operations.
Hunye stated that the companies’ actions violated Section 17 of the Ogun State Waste Management Law of 2020. He pointed out that both companies had been found guilty of using unaccredited waste collectors, which not only contravened the law but also exposed the public to potential health risks, including underground water contamination and foul odors from untreated waste.
“The essence of shutting them down is to ensure that they comply with the standard ways of managing wastes in the state,” Hunye said. He emphasized that the authority had given multiple notices and conducted inspections to counsel the companies on maintaining a clean environment and using government-approved waste collectors, but the companies remained non-compliant.
Hunye warned that the government would take similar actions against any company, whether Nigerian or foreign-owned, found guilty of such violations. “We have no alternative than to shut them down in the overriding public interest, as their behavior and action smack of gross disrespect to constituted authority,” he added.
The Incorporated Trustees of Computer Village Market Traders and Stakeholders Joint Management in Lagos have issued a pre-action notice to Chief Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu, to stop interfering in the market’s affairs. The traders, represented by Falana & Falana’s Chambers, cited a valid judgment from the Lagos State High Court, which permanently restrained her and her agents from imposing and collecting levies from market members.
The notice, dated August 28, 2024, accused Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo of multiple breaches of rights and interference, including instigating thugs and unauthorized levy collection. The traders demanded that she comply with the court judgment and cease further interference, warning that failure to do so would lead to legal action, including seeking costs.
The court judgment, delivered on December 8, 2020, by Justice Y. R. Pinheiro, restrained Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo and her agents from imposing levies on market members, declaring such actions illegal and a violation of their fundamental rights.
Four persons died and 20 others were injured in an auto crash along the Ilesa-Akure express road in Osun State on Wednesday.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) in the state, Taofeek Somunbi, who confirmed the news to journalists on Saturday, said two commercial buses and a truck were involved in the accident.
He added that three women and one man were killed in the incident.
According to the FRSC official, the accident was caused by over-speeding and reckless driving by the drivers of the vehicles involved.

The Founder of an NGO, Baby Blue Angels Foundation, doubled as Senior Special Assistant to Governor Makinde on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. (Mrs) Ramata Agberemi Dabo (RAD), has distributed over 200 food packs to vulnerable persons in her constituency amid the lingering economic crisis rocking the country.
Ramata, in her usual philanthropic style occasioned by her birthday celebration, distributed the food packs across the wards in Akinyele Local Government and Lagelu Local Government.
In her birthday goodwill message, the current Senior Special Assistant to Governor Makinde on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, said it’s important to use the special occasion of her birthday to identify with the vulnerable constituents during this time of of economic hardship followed by several policies initiated by the Federal Government.
“To throw a social party and entertain guests when the majority of our people are struggling to meet their basic needs, particularly food, will be a smack of crass insensitivity,” she stated. I opted to celebrate by giving food packs to more than 200 households in the Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency, therefore I shelved all social activities.
Agberemi, who prayed to God to spare her life for many more years in good health and wealth to be supporting the less privileged, expressed her sincere gratitude to the Almighty God for the opportunity to be alive and to celebrate her birthday.
She attributed her kind gesture as a means to bring succor to the downtrodden in the society at a time when Nigerians are facing acute hunger.
In showering of encomiums, the government functionaries have begun celebrating the political icon. They described Agberemi as a role model for women in public service and one who has earned through her unrelenting spirit and exemplary service.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, says the command has arrested seven suspects involved in the alleged murder of a graduate of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Mojisola Awesu.
Mojisola, 21, who was invited to Ilorin, the state capital, by a dismissed student of Summit University, Offa, Adebayo Happiness, to act as his girlfriend at a party for a fee of N15,000, was allegedly murdered in a hotel where she was lodged on Friday, August 9, 2024.
During the parade of some suspects at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Friday, Olaiya said seven suspects had been arrested in connection with the alleged murder.
The police boss said, “Those arrested included the prime suspect, Adebayo Happiness, his parents, Pastor Adebayo Adeniyi and his wife, Mrs Bukola Adeniyi; Miss Kolawola Timileyin who linked the deceased with the prime suspect as well as three workers of the hotel where she was lodged and gruesomely killed.
“The hotel workers arrested included Adeoye Adeola, Lawal Amina and Bulus Peter.”
According to the police boss, after the murder was committed, the suspect “returned to Offa and concealed the stolen phone in his hostel wardrobe. Through careful and discreet investigation, Mr and Mrs Adebayo Adeniyi, the suspect’s parents, were apprehended.
“Following their son’s arrest, they attempted to tamper with evidence by retrieving Adebayo Joshua Happiness’ belongings from his school. It was discovered that Mrs Adeniyi Bukola had removed the SIM card from the deceased’s iPhone and concealed it within a wall some distance from their residence.
“Contrary to Adebayo Joshua Happiness’ initial claim that he had discarded the phone into the Afelele River, Offa, both the iPhone and SIM card were recovered from his parents’ possession.
“After further investigation, it was discovered that the hotel staff on duty found the deceased’s body in the room and unlawfully disposed of her body at the refuse dump.”
The CP said that upon completion of the investigation, the suspects would be “duly charged to court to face the full extent of the law.
“We assure the public that the Kwara State Police Command remains committed to ensuring justice and maintaining peace and security within the community. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
Seasons and history are truly spectacular, with men and women making lasting impacts that we will never forget. Despite not having wings, they are angels! Our initial meeting had a strong emotional impact on me. I was unaware that Prof. Elizabeth Adenike Emeke was 70 years old until a few months ago. She is a bundle of energy and the personification of all that is pure. Thanks for the grace that keeps her going. We met in 2000 or thereabout at a gathering of the Ibadan Descendants Union (IDU), University of Ibadan/The Polytechnic, Ibadan. The Union is a sociocultural organisation for Ibadan natives who work at the Polytechnic and University of Ibadan to network professionally and socially. It is interesting to note that IDU is one of the three societies, clubs, and unions that came together to form the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) in 1982. I had the honour of working for CCII in many capacities, including acting as the Secretary-General from 2003 to 2005 and the National Public Relations Officer from 2007 to 2009, among others. Ever since our initial meeting, she has been referring to me as “my brother,” as though we are related by blood. Yeah, we are! I’m from Ibadanland’s Yemetu Oje Igosun axis, while she is from the Oke-Ofa Babasale axis. She served with great credit ever since her employment at the University of Ibadan, as well as everywhere else they benefited from her efforts. As a respected dignitary of the Catholic Church, she ably fulfilled her role as a member of the governing boards of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan’s private schools in Ibadanland. Prof. Emeke is an experienced researcher and educational evaluator with over 70 articles in local, national, and worldwide journals, as well as Books of Reading. Being married in a culturally diverse setting to Diokpa Emeke, having travelled extensively within and outside the country, and having served in various administrative and service-oriented capacities, she is sensitive to cultural diversifications in teaching, research, evaluation, and interpersonal relationships. She is comfortable engaging with people at all levels and in a variety of circumstances. Prof. Emeke is proficient in the use of Yoruba, English, and Igbo languages. I have a special relationship with the husband, Diokpa Emeke too. He head-hunted me for a position and came to my house to discuss the matter with me. How Diokpa was able to identify my house and knock at my door, I don’t know in UI? It was a mouth-watering offer which I declined. It is another story for another day. I apologised to him for his love and gesture. Diokpa did it because of my relationship with my Auntie and to strengthen the bond between Yoruba and Igbo. Can anybody separate us? No!
By hard labour rather than by chance, you become what you envisioned. Professor of Educational Evaluation, Science, and Counseling Psychology, Adenike, my Auntie believes, feels, embraces, and becomes it. She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the esteemed University of Ibadan. Not only is she a highly referenced Google Scholar, but she is also a dynamic, lively instructor and committed researcher.
While some people are just interested in the short-term and long-term, stakeholders defend sustainability over the long run. Her time serving as a pioneer member of the University of Ibadan Research Foundation’s (UIRF) Board of Directors speaks for itself. She has an excellent work ethic. I recall anchoring an Inaugural Lecture in the University’s legendary Trenchard Hall and informing the audience, “In case you are feeling falling or funny, please draw the attention of our ushers to your health challenge, who will notify medical personnel from the University Health Service, also known as the Jaja Clinic for necessary attention. In the event of an emergency, there are side exits in the Hall through which you can exit.” According to Prof Emeke, someone who sat next to her stated that I sounded like a scaremonger. However, her daughter, who was with her in the Hall responded, “The man is correct because it is the practice in organisations that value safety. You must inform such a large gathering about the safety protocol.” Every idea shared and every opportunity seized by her helped us achieve the heights in the university. Kudos to her efforts! Her valedictory lecture titled, “SOJOURNING IN NIGERIA’S PREMIER UNIVERSITY: A COUNSELLOR- EVALUATOR’s JOURNEY OF GROWTH, RESILIENCE, AND HOPE” is scheduled for 2nd September, 2024, in the Trenchard Hall of the University of Ibadan. However, I am busy, and she is aware of it. I will try to attend. I admire her. I know her thoughts will resonate with our thoughts.
