Psaltry Reacts As Ado-Awaye Farmers Allege Cassava-Processing Factory Of ‘Exploitation’

Some farmers in Ado-Awaye have alleged the Chief Executive Officer of the cassava-processing Company, Psaltry International of exploitation and lack of transparency in business transactions.

The leading African cassava processing industry is located in Ado-Awaye, Iseyin Local Government of Oyo State.

The farmers who spoke to ODUDUWA NEWS in a media chat with our Correspondent hinged their decision to stop supplying cassava feedstocks to Psaltry on the incessant delayed payment and lack of transparency in business transactions after they have delivered feedstocks to the factory which according to them hindered them from timely reinvestment of their proceeds.

Meanwhile, in a press statement made available today to Oduduwa News by the Special Adviser on Special Duties to the Chief Executive Officer of Psaltry, Madam Yemisi Iranloye, Mr. Opeyemi Bolanle, he debunked the allegation and attributed the report to the handiwork of mischief makers.

The company said this in reaction to a media report criticizing it for delayed payment to farmers, adding that nothing of such happened, as there has been a payment plan according to a memorandum of understanding that has been used for years.

Addressing the accusations of payment defaults and lack of transparency in the weighing system by the publication, the company stated that such claims were far from the truth, stating that Psaltry purchased over ₦1 billion worth of cassava annually from three main segments of suppliers.

“Psaltry is reacting to a so called “exclusive” news story from a blog alleging that Oke-Ogun cassava farmers would no longer sell cassava to the company due to, “delayed payments, lack of transparency in weighing system and no traceable benefits for both community and its indigenes.

“This is clearly the work of mischief makers, our priority has always been to contribute meaningfully to the communities where we operate, we believe that sustainable agriculture and responsible business go hand-in-hand, and our 15-year journey reflects that commitment.

“First, we procure cassava from our out-grower farmers whom we pre-fund, secondly, we source cassava from traders, we pre-fund to reach deep, remote areas where it would be difficult for farmers to bring their produce to us, ensuring that no farmer is left out of our supply chain, thirdly, we work with traders that we have previously trained, who now supply us cassava independently.

“I am happy to inform you that over 600million cassava stems, herbicides as well as Agric loans were made available to these out-growers.”

He noted that each of the arrangements involved a business transaction with mutual obligations, where both parties have an understanding regarding payments and commitments.

To foster greater transparency, Psaltry has also committed to publishing regular impact reports, which will highlight ongoing community initiatives and key contributions to the local agribusiness ecosystem. Through these reports, Psaltry will maintain open lines of communication with stakeholders and continue to champion shared growth and sustainability.

Osinbajo Urges Tinubu To Tackle Economic Hardships, Invest In Education

Former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address the severe economic challenges impacting millions of Nigerians. Speaking at the 2024 Women in Management, Business, and Public Service (WIMBIZ) conference, Osinbajo urged the government to implement social welfare programs and policies aimed at easing daily living costs, which he noted have become overwhelming for many Nigerians.

“The cost of living is overwhelming Nigerians’ hope for survival,” Osinbajo stated, emphasizing the struggles families face amid rising prices for essentials. “Children are suffering from the impact of rising food prices, and we must address this crisis,” he added, calling for stronger social safety nets to help meet basic needs like food, transportation, and housing.

The former Vice President also drew attention to Nigeria’s educational challenges, particularly low literacy rates among women in northern Nigeria, where over 67% of women are reported to be illiterate. He warned that Nigeria’s growth will be stunted if half the population remains without access to education and economic opportunities.

“A country where half the population is socially and economically disempowered due to illiteracy will find development difficult, if not impossible,” Osinbajo cautioned.

Offering solutions, he emphasized the need to invest in education and promote economic independence, particularly for women. “We must invest in education and provide opportunities for economic independence for our people, especially women. This is a critical part of creating a fairer and more prosperous Nigeria,” he concluded.

Breaking: Makinde Approves Payment Of ₦80,000 Minimum Wage For Oyo Workers

The Oyo State Government has approved a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for the State workforce.

In a statement by the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Technical Committee set up by the State Government recommended and got approval from Governor Seyi Makinde for the implementation of the new salary scale.

This new scale will be implemented as soon as the consequential adjustments process is completed by the committee which comprises of Government and Labour top officials.

Prince Oyelade recalled that only last month, a Federal Government Agency, the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, in its latest employment statistics published for 2024, rated Oyo state as the most worker friendly State in the whole of Southern Nigeria owing to a significant decline in Oyo State unemployment rate following a series of high-pitched employment of workers into various sectors of the State.

The Commissioner also emphasized that Oyo State pays its workers salaries on the 25th of every month since Governor Makinde came into office in 2019.

He also said the Governor started paying the previous ₦30,000 minimum wage from inception over four years ago, including consistent payment of pensions, gratuities and 13th month salary for both workers and pensioners alike.

He recalled that since November 2023, Governor Makinde has been paying ₦25,000 to its workers and ₦15,000 to its pensioners as a welfare wage award.

The Information Commissioner noted that the Seyi Makinde administration started paying the wage award to cushion the effect of the Federal Government induced fuel subsidy removal and has also been consistent with the payment for over a year even till date.

Prince Oyelade reiterated that the Governor has paid the backlog of gratuities from 2008-2015 for Pensioners with increase in gratuity payment for Pensioners at both the Local Government Staff Pensions Board and those paid by the Ministry of Establishment and Training.

He added that the Governor has also put back into payroll, Pensioners whose names were removed by the immediate past administration and giving all pensioners annual Christmas/New Year Chicken Bonus.

CCII invites NELFUND to General Assembly Meeting, Advises Students, Parents to key into the fund

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes under the leadership of Barrister Sulaimon Ajeniyi Ajewole hosted representatives from National Education Loan Fund, NELFUND office, Abuja at it’s 1st November General Assembly meeting of all Ibadan sons and daughters at the Bode Amao Hall of Ibadan house, with a call on Ibadan Indigenes to explore opportunities in the project.

In his address, Barrister Ajewole stated that his administration was worried that majority of students from southwest based institutions are yet to maximise the opportunity provided by the fund He stated that his administration saw the need to raise the awareness since there was low enrollment among students from this side of the country and advised parents, guardians and significant others to maximise the opportunity for their children.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Student Loan initiative was championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and enacted through the Access to Higher Education Act of 2023, with the aim to provide interest-free loans for underprivileged Nigerian students attending public tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and vocational schools. Despite its wide-reaching benefits, data shows a surprising underutilization of this loan scheme by Yoruba students, raising concerns about the need for increased awareness within the community.

In their presentation, the representatives from the NELFUND office, Abuja, Mr Wale Ogunleye, (Head of Information Technology, who led the team ,; Mr Gbadamosi Oriyomi (PA to the MD/CEO of NELFUND) and Mr Waziri Idris of Corporate Communications, states that the students’ loan is designed to make higher education “accessible to more Nigerians, allow students from low-income families (earning less than N500,000 annually) to access funds for tuition and other essential fees. Beneficiaries are expected to start repaying the loan two years after completing the National Youth Service, with repayment structured at a 10% deduction from monthly salaries.

Mr Wale Ogunleye explained that for self-employed individuals, 10% of their monthly profit will be deducted until the loan is fully repaid. The structured approach aims to make education accessible while balancing repayment obligations for beneficiaries once they begin earning income, the team submitted He further stated that while the tuition fee will be paid directly into the beneficiary institution account, #20,000 is to be paid to the beneficiary personal account for upkeep at the end of each month, and that the loan can be accessed from first year up to the students final year in school The team stated that NELFUND on its website also has a platform for job adverts for beneficiaries to assist them.secure jobs to facilitate swift and seamless repayment of the loan secured for fund their tertiary education and encouraged students and parents to explore the benefits of the scheme. The NeLFUND team stressed that the programme not only provides financial relief but also opens doors for educational and economic empowerment across Nigeria.

“The mission of the NELFUND team for engaging with CCII is to create awareness. dispel all misinformation around it’s operations and encourage parents to allow their children get onboard NELFUND for unrestricted access to tertiary education.”

The President-General of CCII reiterated that with the provision of the fund, the era of indigent students is gradually coming to an end and implored both Indigenes and residents of Ibadan to leverage on the opportunity as it aims to position education as a tool to combat poverty and elevate their status
