Oyo State Inaugurates Environmental Health Officers Disciplinary Committee, Says DC Will Uphold Professional Ethics Among Officers

The Elders Forum of Environmental Health Officers of Nigeria in collaboration with the Oyo State Chapter of the association headed by Sanitarian Adegoke Tijani on Monday, 10th February 2025 Inaugurated the Disciplinary Committee for the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, Oyo State branch.

The Committee consists of 7 members, 6 of which are Rtd Senior Health Officers up to the rank of Heads of Local Government Administration & Director with the current President of the Environmental Health Officers as the 7th person.

The Inauguration which was held at the Local Government Service Commission Staff Training School complex had in attendance the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Mojeed Mogbonjubola and his colleague from the Ministry of Education, Prof. Abdulwaheed Adelabu who was ably represented.

It should be on record that with this Environmental Disciplinary Committee, Oyo State remains the only state throughout Nigeria with such a committee, setting the pace for others to follow.

While speaking with Journalists, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Mogbonjubola stated that Oyo State has once again demonstrated leadership by taking the lead in the resuscitation and Inauguration of the committee which will bring professionalism to the work of Environmental Health Officers. “It is  only in Oyo State that we have this committee and it will bring value to all Environmental Health Officers in the State, as we expect the best from them”

When asked about the preparedness of the State Government as we await the raining season, the Commissioner Stated that the State Government cleared some waterways, and drainages late last year, and at the same time expanded some bridges. He assured the public that the same activities will be carried out before the commencement of rain to avert disaster, he further admonished the general public to comply with Environmental laws, by not dumping refuse on the median, waterways and other unauthorized places that can lead to environmental disasters.

The Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Sanitarian Akintomide Akinpelu said that the committee is not set up to witch-hunt any officer, but instead to guidance and correct where necessary.
“You know the syndrome of get rich quickly among our youthful population, particularly in Nigeria, though it’s all over the world, which is not good for our profession, so this committee is set up to sanitize our profession to serve as a shining example for other profession. We will do our job with integrity and ensure that there’s no miscarriage of justice, as our main goal is to bring back the lost glory of this profession”

He further stated that the society at large is looking up to Environmental Health Officers when it comes to Environmental Health, and as such there’s is need for the Officers to deliver optimally, as the Disciplinary Committee will be a guiding light for officers.

The President of the Oyo State Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, Oyo State branch, Sanitarian Adegoke Tijani who’s the only serving officer in active service among the Disciplinary Committee stated that the Committee became necessary so as to uphold sanity and discipline within the profession.
“It’s not as if we have officers who are indiscipline, but the purpose of the law is to guide and this committee will be responsible for upholding discipline and promoting professional ethics among our officers”

Iyalode Ibadan-in Council Pays Condolence Visit to Governor Makinde over Brother’s Death

A delegation representing the Iyalode of Ibadanland, Chief (Mrs.) Theresa Oyekanmi, paid a condolence visit to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, following the passing of his beloved brother. The visit, which took place at the Governor’s residence, was a solemn moment of support and solidarity from the traditional women leadership of Ibadanland.

Osogbo Students Shine in Anti-Corruption Essay Competition

In a bid to promote integrity and awareness about the dangers of corruption, the Anti-Corruption Group (ACG) Osogbo, in collaboration with Olorunda Local Government, hosted an essay competition on the topic “The Impact of Corruption in Nation Building.”

The event brought together students from various schools across Osogbo and Olorunda local government areas.The competition, held on Thursday, 9th January 2025, at the Olorunda Local Government Secretariat, saw impressive participation from young minds eager to tackle one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.

In a rewarding ceremony held on Thursday, 16th January 2025, at the Osogbo Local Government Secretariat, the winners were celebrated for their exceptional essays. Oluwole Abdulqudus from Government Technical College emerged as the overall winner, clinching the ₦30,000 cash prize.The second-place prize of ₦15,000 was given to two participants who tied for the position: Adekahunji Samson Temidayo of L.A. Adenije Grammar School and Uthman Habeebah of Christ Grammar School.

Speaking at the event, “the President of the Osogbo Anti-Corruption CDS Group, Olaniyi Oluwaseyi Solomon, commended the students for their insightful submissions. “This competition is not just about winning cash prizes; it’s about creating a generation of young Nigerians who understand the dangers of corruption and the importance of integrity in nation-building,” he said.The event was well-attended by NYSC local government officials, educators, and Corps members, all of whom praised the initiative for fostering a culture of accountability and encouraging youths to be active participants in the fight against corruption.

The organizers seek sponsorship to sustain the competition annually, hoping it would inspire more young people to join the fight against corruption and advocate for transparency in all aspects of governance.

Oyo First Lady Visits Hospitals, Welcomes Christmas Babies With Gifts

The wife of Oyo State Governor, Engineer Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, visited hospitals in the state to welcome newborns and their mothers with gifts on Christmas day.

The gesture was part of her efforts to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and Governor Seyi Makinde’s birthday, which also falls on December 25.

During her visit, Mrs. Makinde presented cash gifts and various baby items to the mothers and their newborns.

The hospitals were State Hospital, Owode, Oyo, and Oba Adeyemi Primary Healthcare Centre, Durba, Oyo.

The first Christmas baby, a female, was born at 12:40 am at State Hospital, Owode, Oyo, weighing 2.5 kg. Her mother is Mrs. Suliat Salawudeen.

The second baby, a male, was born at 4:17 am at Oba Adeyemi Primary Healthcare Centre, Durba, Oyo, weighing 2.4 kg. His mother is Mrs. Aisha Tijani.The third baby, also a female, was born at 6:22 am at State Hospital, Owode, Oyo, weighing 2.4 kg. Her mother is Ikimot Enitan.

Mrs. Makinde emphasized the importance of proper parental care and upbringing, stating that it is crucial for building a better and safer society.She also encouraged parents not to let prevailing challenges in the country hinder them from giving their children the best possible care.On the Entourage of the First Lady were Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, Commissioner Budget and Planning, Professor Musibau Babatunde, Chairpersons of Oyo East, Oyo West, Afijio and Atiba local government and Pastor Victoria Wale Oke, wife of PFN President.
