Protest: Oyo Govt To Convene Stakeholders’ Meeting As Poly Ibadan Mgt Reinstates Students’ Union

Oyo state government is to convene a meeting of the management of the Polytechnic Ibadan, governing council and the students over protest on the alleged increase in hostel refusal fee and the issues of consultant in the institution’s affairs.

The meeting which is scheduled to hold at the state’s Ministry of Education’s conference room tomorrow 10th January would address issues raised by the students. Recall, earlier today, students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan protested at the State Secretariat over the increase in amount payable for hostel refusal fee from 5000 to 15000. Addressing the hundreds of students who protested to the Agodi,Secretariat, Ibadan, the Deputy Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal said Oyo state government would look into the suspension of the Students’ Union Government by the management of the institution following the recent protest.

The Deputy Governor therefore appealed for calm from both parties involved with a promise to resolve the matter amicably. Also, the Commissioner for Education, Abiodun Abdul Raheem in an interview explained that the meeting would provide an avenue for parties to speak with a view to solving the problem.

Meanwhile, the management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan has released a statement to lift the suspension order slammed on the Students’ Union activities.

A statement from the Institution signed by the Registrar, Mrs. Modupe Theresa Fawale disclosed that the reversal of the decision was based on interventions to allow for further consultations. The Management has decided not to use the big stick on the students as they have also sheath their sword.
