The Registrar, National Board for Technical Education, Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, says no fewer than 74,069 candidates, representing 92.68 per cent of candidates that sat the 2021 School National Business Certificate, and National Technical Certificate, failed English and Mathematics but still scored above five credits.

She added that these candidates fall under the categories of those who scored above five credits but with or without English and Mathematics.

The Registrar, who disclosed this on Friday in Benin at a Press conference held to announce the release of the 2021 NBC/NTC examinations, however, said that 58,307 candidates, representing 72.96 per cent of the candidates who sat both exams, scored five credits including English and Mathematics.

Isiugo-Abanihe, who said that a total of 83,504 registered for the examinations in 1,614 centres across the country, noted that only 79,915 candidates showed up to sit for the examinations, which represents 95.70 per cent.

She noted that these candidates’ performance in the 2021 examinations was a significant improvement compared to 2020.

She added, “Furthermore, a total of 74,069 candidates obtained 5 credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics; this represents 92.68 per cent of the candidates that sat for the examinations. Comparatively, this performance is higher than the previous year’s 2020 in-school NBC/NTC examinations results where 36,202 candidates representing 63.99 per cent obtained five credits and above including English and Mathematics.”

Speaking on effort made to curb examination malpractice in the system, the Registrar said the Board has countinously apply strategies to reduce such act in the system, just as she added that the effort yeilded desirable results with the record of 0.54 examination malpractice of the total number of candidates that sat for the exams.

“These efforts yielded desirable results in the last NBC/NTC examinations. For instance, 455 candidates representing 0.54% of the total number of candidates that sat for the 2021 NBC/NTC examinations were involved in examination malpractice. Comparatively, a total of 453 candidates, representing 0.79 of the total number of candidates that sat for the 2020 in-school certificate examinations were involved in examination malpractice which implies a decrease in malpractice incidences,” she said.

While noting that the Board has continue to record significant increase in enrollment, the Registrar noted that the Federal Government Recognises the importance of technical and vocational education and training, along with technology science and Mathematics as tools for national technological development.
