Afenifere Leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti Dies at 100

Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the national leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has died at the age of 100.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, announced the death of the revered elder statesman in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, describing his passing as a great loss to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

Fasoranti, who celebrated his 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, was widely respected for his contributions to Nigerian politics, democratic struggles and advocacy for good governance. He was a prominent follower of the political philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and played a significant role in the progressive political movement in the South-West.

The late elder statesman served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin. He later emerged as the leader of Afenifere following the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya, becoming one of the most influential voices on Yoruba affairs and national restructuring.

In his condolence message, Governor Aiyedatiwa described Fasoranti as a symbol of wisdom, integrity and selfless service whose life was dedicated to the development of Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

The governor said the late leader’s counsel, fatherly guidance and principled positions on justice and good governance would be greatly missed. He also extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom and the entire state.

Fasoranti’s death marks the end of a century-long life of public service, political activism and commitment to democratic governance, leaving behind a legacy that will remain significant in the history of Yoruba leadership and Nigeria’s political development.
